First, I want to tell you guys straight up that I'm probably going to be stuck with a 720p monitor. So, no gtx 970 for me (overkill). Budget is around $750.

Second, I basically use my rig as a Team Fortress 2 machine most of the time. Although, I do a bit of light video editing with Sony Vegas, a bit of photoshop and illustrator. Planning to keep this rig within 5 years. Also reusing my 600w OCZ psu, DVD drive, matx case(a Bitfenix Prodigy M, as some of you may know),my 500GB hdd and at the very moment my GTS 450 (doing decent right now, I just feel cpu needs more processing power)

Specs:
Intel i5 4670/4670k/4460 (hard time to decide..)

8GB/16GB DDR 3 ram (I often hold a lot of tabs in Chrome. Bonus if I could keep Photoshop stand by while playing TF2. not too sure if I really need though.)

128gb ssd. Pretty much any decent yet cheap ssd you could find.

I also wonder if I should also buy a decent cpu cooler (something like the 212x) even when I'm not going to get the k series processor and overclock.

What are your thoughts? I know it's a bit strange to see someone still using a 2010 gfx card today, heh, but thanks for replying.

1) If not doing OC, the i5 4690 will do.

2) Get 16GB RAM, video and photo editing does use up a lot of RAM.

3) Get a Samsung 840 Evo, not any old cheap SSD. The fast write/read speeds of the SSD will allow you to save/open large media files faster.

4) If not doing OC, a cheap Deepcool cooler is all that you will need at most if you do not want a stock Intel cooler, no need a Hyper 212X.

First and foremost budget is important.

Right, right. Looks to be about ~$750?

840 Evo SSDs are expensive imo. Is there another option?

After a bit of thought, maybe I'll decide to forgo the ssd for now and get the 4670k along with the hyper X cooler. Not sure if there are better heatsinks for that price though.
I do need a Z97 board, right?

You will need a Z-mobo to OC your K-CPU and these things are not cheap.

In contrast, the Samsung 840 Evo 128GB costs a mere $109 and will be of great help in saving and opening large media files.

Rethinking again, maybe I just pay a bit more and get the ssd, the k processor along with the z97 mobo and 16gb ram, which is about 750.

If you just need more cpu power, swap your C2D with a C2Q if your motherboard support it. Straightaway you double your CPU power for less than $40. But if you want USB3.0 and SATA3, then I would recommend the latest Haswell motherboard and i5 processor.

Even if I could, I don't know where to get a c2q for a good price.

USB 3 and SATA 3 would be really nice especially with ssd and some wifi adapters like my Archer t4u that I happen to be using.
