New rig

Hi guys,

I'm currently using Acer Predator with a i5-3470 together with a mini upgrade of GTX 550ti. So, I wanted to upgrade it again and went ahead and ordered MSI GTX 960 from amazon. Tried to plug it in to use but found out PSU not strong enough to support this GPU.

After this long introduction, my question is should I go all-in and get a whole new rig with this new GTX 960? Or should I just change the PSU?

If recommend a whole new rig, my budget would be around $600 for the tower only. No need GPU, monitor, mouse and keyboard.

If recommend a change of PSU, which PSU should I get?

have to depend on the layout of the case. Some OEM cases have special form factor which limits the PSU selection available.

Does your mbo support the GPU first?

acer locks their mbo to their specific cards only ( not sure if your does it also)

I believe it does. I upgraded it from a sh*tty GT 630 to a GTX 550ti..

Would be good to take a picture of your PSU to see the specs on it.

I am not sure if the PSUs differ between Predator G models, but I have worked on Predator G with GTX960 in it

I'm actually more towards putting in another $600-750 to getting a whole new pc and this old pc can probably be put in the living room for home entertainment.

Hmmm I don't know if I calculate correctly, but seems like your 12V rails can go up to 30A.

Power wise, I believe it should work, so maybe it is the mobo...

Hmm for your new rig, what components do you need? Do you need Windows as well?

I need windows. SSD or not doesn't matter, doesn't need GPU(since I already got 1), doesn't need keyboard mouse monitor speakers since I'll reuse the old ones as they're still useable and good conditions.
I'll be playing Witcher 3, GTA 5, GW2, Total War games and I want to be playing them at 1080p, Medium-High settings.

Though if you want to save a little more, you can opt for a non modular PSU like the FSP Hexa Plus 500W at 68, and maybe buy Windows from G2A.

If you can spare a bit more cash, I really think a SSD is a good idea. It is pretty affordable for a decent sized SSD right now and I think it is good in a desktop system.
