I'm totally out of touch with hardware/software matters and my knowledge is severely outdated so please do be gentle. Looking for advice from HWZ bros.

I picked up an SSD on a whim (XLR8 from Amazon FYI) and will be using it as my OS drive. First time with SSD so i'm sure i'll be impressed :D.

My current setup is just a regular 1TB HDD partitioned in 2 (OS C:, Storage D: ). Was intending to clone the OS drive to the SSD (Acronis is supplied) and after changing boot priority will probably remap the Storage to D: (if it doesn't default to it) so on paper things should be running the same way as before with the added bonus of SSD performance.

I'm wondering if I'm missing anything out here. OS cloning isn't a new thing but I've read that only clean installs of Windows 10 on an SSD will enable W10 to take advantage of all the SSD unique functions (TRIM etc). Of course i'd like to avoid the hassle of reinstalling W10 as its gonna take a lot of time to redownload/install all the current apps.

Any advice from all you helpful bros here? Googling mostly points me to guides to do this but very little on the differences/complications that may arise.

Need to ensure AHCI instead of PATA/IDE mode in BIOS? Any complication?

Hey thanks for the reply but I'm quite aware on how to physically install the SSD. AHCI isn't a problem either. More interested in cloning complications since I'm reading conflicting information about W10 and SSDs. From the previous 2 responses I think my doubts are not as warranted as I had first thought.

I am not a big fan of cloning old data over to a new drive. I think its a good opportunity to do a clean format and start afresh.

Also, I've come across some of these migration software that don't do a good job, i.e. they clone the OS drive, but not the Windows reserved partition. In the end, I encountered quite a bit of problem and eventually reformatted. :s13:

When i bought crucial it came with arconis and cloning takes 10 minute.

When my friend bought samsung 840 he just use the supplied software and clone in 10 minutes.

You worry too much over something small. If you did face problem then just reformat. Whats the worst that can happen

Just clone. If unable to boot from ssd then use HDD boot and run acronis or whatever and rebuild the MBR on the ssd. Should be able to run after that
