I would be going to Japan from Christmas and would be coming back on the first week of January...Any events going on during the period? Any countdown party for the New Year? This is my first time travelling to Japan...

Have you booked your accommodation ?

Please do. The prices are mad during those days.

Apple fukubukuro

All major departmental stores/shopping brands fukubukuro on Jan 2/3

Shrine visit on new years eve

Bonenkai (wish the year goodbye) parties. All you can drink and sometimes all you can eat. Ask at izakayas

Not so sure about countdown parties.

You might wanna look within Tokyo. Narita is a 1800 yen (round trip), 2hrs by train or 1h30 mins by bus. (Each way)

shibuya crossing LOL

i went last year. not fun. from 9+ to way past midnight the hachiko exit and the subway exits were sealed by alot of policemen. it was pretty **** squeezing with a heck of lot of loud drunk people and being unable to leave because where you could walk was pretty much dictated by the crowd (by squeezing i mean i felt like an idiot for bringing my camera because i couldnt use it). i'll be spending this year at my sis's home and just going to the shrine the next day to look at pretty girls.. :s22:

*if you want a less rowdy celebration go to yokohama or zojoji. yokohama got some mini fireworks thing and people blasting music from their kei cars.

and drink amazake if you see any stalls selling it. its good stuff.

I went on these dates a few years ago. Their 31th is a little like our CNY eve. Lots of crowd and rush in the morning, then shops start to shut down from mid aftn onwards.

The usual party spots like Shibuya, Roppongi would get crowded from 8 onwards or so on 31th. Lots of foreigners. If you like it more traditional, you can go queue at the Asakusa shrine and hear the 108 bells.

Don't go Disney on these dates unless you have a fetish for queues. UNEARTHLY LONG queues.

Actually I think Odaiba might be a nice place to spend the 31th. Sea view. Restaurants should mostly be opened. (Might need reservations though). There's a joypolis there, ferris wheel, museums, and the Oedo Onsen which I'm quite sure would be opened. A modern, less crowded Japanese way to spend New Year.

Erm... Why you stay in Narita unless you plan to spend a lot of your time there?

Need 1hr to get to Tokyo, not worth it if you do so everyday.

First trip...so not sure how it is like in Japan...Also Narita is close to the airport so easier to go there...

Change to a hotel near a station near Yamanote Line now .

You are like staying at Sepang for 1st time KL trip , a few times worse than staying at Pasir Ris for 1st
Singapore trip.

Not sure where you have booked but it's not too late to change to hotel now where it's closer to the city. Even staying at Yokohama for daily commute to Tokyo is much better than staying at Narita.

Not near Tokyo but stay in Tokyo !
Tokyo is bigger than Singapore & many confusing train / subway lines .
Best is near Yamanote line stations ,travel with day pass as the must-see are reachable with this circle line .
Many hotels ( like my preferred Toyoko Inn are
on average $60-90 per night ).

Thanks for the suggestions..booked my hotel with agoda...later try and change the hotel to somewhere near the city...
