Will be in japan from mid Dec till first week of Jan.

Would like to seek advice, how “dead” will new year day (01/01) be? In term of shops/food establishments. Will it be hard to find food and shopping. Will it be the same for that week or just new year day.. did some research online but found nothing conclusive.

Thanks for advice in advance! Will help in planning of itinerary. Still deciding to Osaka/Hiroshima for the first 3 days of new year.

Major cities, there will be some shops and f&b open. Temples & Shrines normally crowded during the new year, but most tourist attractions will be closed, especially on 1st Jan, most will be closed.

Shrines and temples will be very crowded. There will be restaurants open for sure. Almost everything in Odaiba is open but most of Ginza and Shinjuku will be closed.

2nd and 3rd Jan is Fukubukuro day so you can see lots of locals queuing up for good deals in front of malls before they open.

In the first week of Jan, be prepared that some restaurants will be closed for NY break where staff go back to celebrate the NY

Not all restaurants are affected though, i experienced this in a sprinkling of restaurants.

Family owned restaurants will be closed for sure but the chain ones will be open like Yoshinoya, MOS, KFC, not mentioning kombini.

Was in Tokyo 2 New Year ago, majority of top restaurants and even some fast food chains closed on Eve, 1st, etc. in fact the top restaurants close for a week or longer. Tsukiji Market also closed.
Many places close from the week before New Year, so couldn’t visit Yamazaki Distillery or other Suntory Distillery too.
The one special is to visit the Imperial Palace to watch the Royal Family greet her people on 2nd, quite a fun experience and to view the beautiful Inperial Palace landscapes.
Hakone opens from 2nd onwards I believe for some marathon but you won’t be able to get any decent ryokans as these are booked out a year in advance.

No need to do that. There will still be food stalls open. All kombini carry food and worst possible case, you can just buy their instant noodle and eat there.
