Very interesting about this announcement.

1) PTC just announced transport fare hikes because transport operators need monies to sustain businesses.

On the other hand, LTA announced free rides for buses in NE and MRT NEL lines. Who is paying for it? Taxpayers who are not staying along NEL?

This means that the announced fare hike is to redistribute the extra monies to finance the free rides in NE.

The timing for both announcements said its all.

The question is - is it fair for other commuters who are not from NE to foot the bill for those who stayed along NE.

2) Gan and SXL won a hard battle in GE2025 despite winning in the end. They need to win the voters over in GE2030 convincedly. Now this imitative is a good start.

Why didn't LTA announce free rides for the whole of Singapore? Why only NE areas? The answer is so obvious.

I can tell you in GE2030, WP has zero chance of winning in Punggol. SK may also be lost (don't assume that it won't happen).

Overall, this move is well crated and strategised.

  • Free rail rides will be offered from selected NEL stations and the SPLRT before 7.30am or between 9am and 9.45am on weekdays, starting Dec 27.
Shd it be "between 9am to 9.45am"?

Or does it mean free if you board at 9am sharp and 9.45am sharp?

U will be surprised. Starts 27 Dec, 60% FT balik kampong for Xmas-NY, 50% of punggol/sk residents in JB, MRT report load drop over 50% during peak, Jeff declare scheme resounding success and thank the PG/SK residents for being so smart.

Other commuters not staying in pg and sk pay their taxes too. Why is there no equal treatment?

Cant they extend the free rides during off peak periods to islandwide?

Acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow says the free rail ride scheme is unrelated to fare hikes and stresses the need to shift travel patterns on the rail network. :s12:
Passengers interviewed by The Straits Times in Kovan and Sengkang said they welcomed the free rail rides, though they pointed out that the trains on the NEL and SPLRT are already crowded during off-peak hours.

They suggested other ways in which the authorities can alleviate the crowds, such as by increasing the frequency of buses to the city, and increasing publicity on travel discount schemes to encourage participation.

A couple, who gave their names only as Mr and Mrs Fum, travel downtown daily from their Buangkok home with their seven-year-old son. They drop their son off at school before heading to work.

To avoid the morning crowd, they would ride the NEL in the opposite direction to the Punggol Coast terminus station in order to get seats for their trip to town.

Mr Fum, 45, a software engineer, said of the situation on the NEL: “When you board at 8am, it’s a disaster. You can squeeze in, but it’s very hard to squeeze out.”

Mrs Fum, a 41-year-old auditor who works in Tanjong Pagar, said buses are a good idea to divert the morning crowd away from the rail network, but she hopes they could come more frequently to encourage more people to use them.

Exactly.
Jeff to LW: 1. Peak load drop 50%. 2. Yet well within budget for FoC rides.
LW to Jeff: you and yr scholars team at LTA are outstanding. A double win.
