Ever since x86-64 came out, the industry has no reason to not abandon the itanium..

Are you joking?

x86 and x64 are the most inefficient architectures ever. Even with all the developments, x64 cannot even run at full clock for extended periods of time without thermal throttling. And neither Intel or AMD are able to get SMT up beyond a factor of 2.

POWER on the other hand, is designed to run at maximum performance under high temperatures for long periods of time. Want to know what processor is in today's cars? Not ARM and definitely not x64. But POWER.

And POWER today has achieved SMT with a factor of 4 and 8 so a basic 12-core SMT8 POWER9 Sforza CPU has 96 processor threads at its disposal. Also, x64 Xeon's RAM cap is 1TB. POWER9 supports 64TB.

The only thing x64 has going for it is its ubiquity in in the PC platform.
