It depends on how you interpret it, really.

Think from certain social norm perspective, when talking to a very much senior and respectable person who is sitting down, a very junior person who is standing up and talking down to the senior would not make a good sight as it would come across as pretty disrespectful. Moreover, the shorter distance (as compare to standing up) between each other makes hearing the the senior person much clearer (can see that she is somewhat straining to hear what cst saying also, probably cst is not speaking too loudly bah). Thus, its only natural then to lower oneself to the same level to talk (or kneeling/squating whichever is more comfortable).
