In order to stay in the local job, a Vietnamese nightclub manager proposed a fake marriage to a cash-strapped waiter. She paid the other party $33,500 in more than two years and added the waiter's name to the rental contract to create the illusion of cohabitation. Both were sentenced to jail.
The fake couple is Vietnamese Chen Meiliang (30 years old) and local man Deng Zhaohe (25 years old), facing six and five charges of violating immigration laws respectively.
The two admitted two of the charges in the National Court on Monday (March 3). After taking the remaining charges into consideration, the judge sentenced them to six months and eight weeks in jail. In addition to imprisonment, Deng Zhaohe was also fined $12,000. As he was unable to pay the fine, he had to serve an additional six weeks in jail instead.
According to the case, Chen Meiliang held an S pass at the time of the incident and worked as a public relations manager at a nightclub in Jalan Sultan, while Deng Zhaohe was a waiter in the nightclub.
Chen Meiliang found that Deng Zhaohe needed money because of debt, and in order to stay in the local area and continue to work, she proposed to the latter in 2021 to fake marriage after her pass expired. She promised to pay Deng Zhaohe a sum of 8,000 yuan after the fake marriage, and the latter needed to help her apply for a long-term visit pass. Every time she successfully obtained a pass, she would pay Deng Zhaohe 1,500 yuan per month.

41 people were arrested for fake marriage last year, a four-fold increase year-on-year

In order to make quick money, Deng Zhaohe agreed to this arrangement and began to prepare for the marriage in September 2021, including arranging marriage registrars and witnesses. On January 16, 2022, the two got married in Chen Meiliang's apartment unit on Beach Road. They did not live together after marriage.
Chen Meiliang paid the remuneration as agreed, and also added Deng Zhaohe's name to the lease of the apartment unit, and instructed the latter to change the address to create the illusion of cohabitation.
From January 19, 2022 to March 12, 2024, Chen Meiliang successfully obtained short-term and long-term visit passes six times. During this period, Deng Zhaohe submitted false declarations when applying for visit passes for her, and received a total of 33,500 yuan in remuneration from this "marriage".
The two were arrested in November 2024.
When Chen Meiliang pleaded for mercy, she said that she was the breadwinner of the family, and her 12-year-old son was now taken care of by her elderly parents. She hoped to be released from prison and return to China to take care of the family as soon as possible. Deng Zhaohe said that he had realized his mistakes and pleaded with the judge to give a lenient sentence. (Transliteration of the name)
