Nikko Toshogu Shrine

Has anyone went to visit the above shrine? Heard that it's undergoing some renovation. Would like to know how intensive is the renovation and will I be missing out the big picture if I like to go there.

Also, how to go there from Tokyo on my own? Or should I sign up a 1 day tour to Nikko? I will be in Tokyo this weekend.

BTW, I was in Tokyo last month so already know how to take their trains

Construction Notice: Several of the shrine's many buildings are being renovated in stages from 2007 to 2019. Until spring 2013, the haiden/honden hall is being renovated, but visitors can still enter the building, and the general impact on a visit is rather small. From April 2013, the Yomeimon Gate is scheduled for renovation works that are expected to take six years.

given what I have seen of Japanese style restoration of their cultural heritage sites

they will cover up the part they are working on and the rest of the place is still accessible.

so if they working on the gate part (which is soon) they will cover that part up with boards and stuff and work out of your sight

After toshogu, stay at kinugawa onsen for a night. They are very near.

Just visited the shrine and temples at Nikko yesterday. Apart from the entire 輪王寺 fully boxed up for restoration, the rest of the attractions are still untouched.

Bought the World Heritage Pass. Definitely cheaper than signing up 1 Day Nikko tour.
