Speaking of warranties, are any of you importers having second thoughts about forgoing the local warranty?

What do you mean?

For me, all the vids and pic of switch seems to be well made and I like to imagine I can use my switch for the next 2-3 years with no issue at all.

like scratches on screen etc lor..u nv send it for repair b4? ppl always complain abt their repair..

There are a few things about the Switch that may be factors of concern:

- It's supposedly powerful, it's basically a console but runs at half speed when undocked. What that means is that, unlike other handhelds, the Switch is running hot and uses active cooling (ie. has a fan). In fact you can see an air vent on the top. How much heat is generated internally (by the cpu, gpu, memory) and how effective (and how long lasting) the cooling is remain to be seen. (Cue the Xbox 360 RROD scenario.)

- It has many moving parts. You slide in the joy cons, you take them out, you dock the switch, you slide into grips, you open up the flip-out stand (I believe this little flap is going to be the most commonly damaged part), you probably are not going to bring the strap all the time so might be swinging joy con around (can fly out lah), etc. It also has several batteries (the main unit, each joy con) and batteries could have issues (not necessarily the Note 7 case but over time batteries tend to have diminishing life per charge).

I do believe it can last 1 yr (taking it out of warranty period), barring any RROD scenario, but wont bet on 2-3 yrs.

Most electronic stuff (tablet, smartphone, laptop) nowadays have no problem lasting 2-3 years.
I wouldn't try to read too much into Switch not being able to last 3 years.
If you worry too much and nitpick here and there, you might as well not buy any gadget at launch. Even PS4 and XBoxOne has cause of concern considering previous gen had RROD and YLOD.

Yea bought my PS4 day 1 from Amazon. Exchanged 2 set still faulty. :(

His points are somewhat compelling but I do agree with you, it would be really surprising if switch cannot last more than a year. I am not too familiar with Nintendo's track record, but my impression of their hardware tend to be really sturdy?

if people are upgrading their phones every 2 years, i don't see why they can't pay another $600 for a new switch when the phone easily cost 2x more. $600 for a handheld console with bigger screen, better hardware and better graphics is cheap

My Wii has problem with the disc drive within a year, have to insert/eject a few times before it can read my game discs properly. I believe it is due to the disc drive trying to handle 2 sizes of discs. Didn't bother to send for repair since it still works, and Maxsoft warranty is kinda dubious, they said send back to the shop or something.

Fact still remains, this is the first handheld with console processors (even though detail specs are not revealed yet), so heat management is going to be important when cramped inside a small form factor. The Xbox 360 looks very sturdy too, who (certainly not Microsoft) would have thought it could overheat and RROD? The problem only surfaced after many months, a year even, when warranty was over (MS had to extend warranty for RROD cases). Similarly for Samsung Note 7.

Sh*t happens with electronics. Sh*t hitting the fan is not distributed equally, so not everyone will get hit. It's a matter of risk. I've imported consoles like PS4, PS3, NDS XL and lots of accessories myself, no problem. The Switch has some design properties (heat, flimsy stand, etc) that makes it higher risk if not handled well.
