Plans to permanently host up to a dozen fighter planes from Singapore at Andersen Air Force Base are moving along but a local group closely monitoring military buildup activities on Guam, the Pacific Center for Island Security, said housing issues need to be included in the planning.
“What I’m really concerned about is there is no anticipation of housing issues, and (the ongoing military buildup) already plays havoc with our local housing market,” Pacific Center for Island Security chairman Robert Underwood said. “I just doubt any other community in the U.S. would be dealt with this way.”
Underwood, a former Guam delegate to Congress, said these concerns go beyond the environmental impact.
The arrival of Singapore air force and support personnel will likely require another 240 housing units that aren’t accounted for in the Air Force’s current plans, according to Underwood, a former president of the University of Guam.

“They’ve got tunnel vision. They’re just focused on what they’re doing as a military unit, and not having any concern about what the impact is on the civilian community,” Underwood said.
