No dry cabinet interm solution?

Was wondering , if I have not gotten a dry cabinet yet is there anyway to keep a camera dry?

I say leave it in a sealed box with some food silica gel

Load up some Silica gels in the box. Be sure that the gels are still in the original colors. If the color changes to pink/ other color than normal, one should heat them up to remove the attracted mositure in them.

This is only fungal protection. You have to protect the electronics & rubbers and lubrication as well.

everyone got their own set of mindset and experience...

anything reasonable is fine

for long term, dry cabinet

short term, dont worry about it... sealed box with silica is good enough

In my experience.

For a dry cabinet, the humidity can be set easily. If the temperature is fairly consistent, the humidity will as well. The humidity can be set ideally to keep fungus away and yet not dry out the rubber, seals and lubricant.

For a dry box or air tight container using silica gel, setting the ideal humidity is a challenge and likely involves trial and error. Usually the humidity will be on the extreme low end which is detrimental to the rubber, seals and lubricant.

I also can say -
I have a camera & lens left in the open in the store room for more than 5 years. I just checked, no fungus.
I have another camera and lens left in a camera bag in office for more than 6 months. I checked, no fungus.

But I cannot say, what works will work for others.

P.S. I just found out that the emergency dry box I have, is leaking.

Try and see, buy some expensive equipment and keep in both storage, see which one lasts and works better.

Nothing beats a practical test.
