[update] edit: The problems are fixed after cleaning my whole CPU of dust. No more freeze, shutdown. There were nothing wrong with my HDD, PSU or motherboard.

So, here are my computer specs.

intel i5 2500k (3-5 years old. got it when it just came out)
zotac z68 itx wifi (3-5 years old. got it when it just came out)
EVGA 750Ti 2gb (1 year old)
8gb ram (3-5 years old)
silverstone sg07 with default 80plus bronze 600W psu (3-5 years old)
WD 1TB HDD (5+ years old) Storage Drive
Intel 730 480GB SSD (9 mths old) OS Drive

Yesterday 12/9 like any other day, i usually just switch off my monitor and went to sleep.
When i wake up, i switch on the monitor and found out that the computer froze. (At the desktop, few minutes after i went to bed last night, i also noticed that my keyboard and mouse were not powered (no lights coming from them)).

I force shut down the computer and tried to turn it on. The monitor+keyboard+mouse has no signal. The gpu+mobo+casing fans are all spinning, after a few seconds, the computer tried to restart itself, but it can't seem to boot up.

I googled this problem. I turned off the wall's power switch, removed the power cord and hold the casing power switch for 60sec.
After doing this, i can see the big ZOTAC logo from my monitor when i turn it on. After that i saw the msg "bootmgr is missing. Press ctrl alt del to restart"
So i googled this problem. Tried to do a startup repair then a system restore from the windows 7 cd. Doing these made my computer go to the "Windows is starting screen for 2 seconds and then there is BSOD for half a second followed by a autoreboot"
I tried all sorts of repair methods that is known to my knowledge and decided to reinstall windows 7 on my SSD w/ a clean format on the SSD.

Everything went well after reformatting. I am able to use the computer as per normal for a day. (youtube, gaming, music, net surfing) all were no problem.

So after a day, at around 3pm today, 13/9. I tried to wake up my computer from auto sleep mode (did not change the auto sleep mode for 30mins of inactivity setting after reformat).
The computer could not wake up. The monitor+mouse+keyboard were not powered. The last time i am able to use the computer was 2pm today 13/9.
So i had to force shut down again. Monitor not showing anything when i start it up. Remove power cord and hold the casing power button for 60seconds and manage to start the computer up.

The first restart failed to resuming windows screen. It froze.
The second restart was sucessful when it prompt me to delete the resuming process and start up windows normally.

From then on, I am still able to use the computer without problems...yet and i am typing this thread as i have seriously no idea what is wrong with my computer.

Sorry for the wall of text and i will update any future problems here.
Any inputs from u guys are deeply appreciated! Thank you.

Go to Disk Management. For the HDD, do you see two partitions there - a system partition and a primary partition?

hmm.. i have thoughts of replacing it sooner or later as it is pretty old incase it suddenly dies. I might get a new one asap after reading your comment.

For me im guessing either the WD HDD, mobo, psu is alittle faulty, but these parts are still running fine. My pc works like normal, i know there must be something wrong, but i cant figure out which.

But for now i can still use the WD HDD perfectly fine, write and reading the files in it are no problem. Even before i see your msg i am already backing up my files to my ext hdd. :D

Thanks for your input, hope other forumers have some thoughts about my problem

I only see 1 partition? I not sure abt this so i attached a pic
The SSD system reserved 100MB was not there previously.
After reformating then it shows up there. I have no idea why too

Just unplug the WD HDD for a few days and see if problem goes away. Look like you fail to disconnect WD HDD when doing setup for SSD.

One partition for the HDD is correct. I was checking whether the System Reserved partition ended up on the HDD by mistake.

The 100MB System Reserved for the SSD is supposed to be there. This is where the Boot Manager resides. There is a slight problem in that this 100MB got assigned a drive letter, which happens when there is an error in the Windows installation process.

I suspect that you have boot files on both the HDD and SSD, which ended up corrupted.

It is possible to troubleshoot this but since you have just done a clean reinstall, a better solution will be to -
(1) backup all your data to external storage;
(2) unplug the HDD;
(3) re-partition the SSD (one partition will do - Windows will automatically create the 100MB System Reserved partition and maybe another partition called the Recovery partition);
(4) clean reinstall of Win 7 and your other programs;
(5) test that everything is working fine;
(6) plug in the HDD, wipe the HDD and then copy over the data from external storage.

okay, will do that. thanks!

No need reinstall. It should boot fine with WD removed. If cannot then just run fixboot and fixmbr

some updates,

fyi, my computer is able to shutdown and restart without problems like bootmgr is missing before doing anything below.

1) so i pop the windows 7 installation disc and went to cmd and did a "bootrec /fixmbr" , after that i went to the install windows 7 page and clean format my WD HDD. I did a restart and i got the "bootmgr is missing error"

2) went to win7 repair your computer option, automatically prompts me to repair my startup as there is some problems. clicked repair and restart. Nothing changed, error is still there.

3) went to cmd, did a "bootrec /fixboot" , restart, error is still there.

4) monitor, keyboard, mouse all not lighting up. unplug hdd and restart. Windows successfully boot up to my desktop, no problems at all.

5) restart my pc, plug in HDD, windows successfully boot up, no problems at all. checked disk management, checked BIOS, make sure bootup drive is not the HDD

For now i think my pc is fine now, other than the SSD reserved partition showing up. Should i just remove the "letter" from the disk management? Will it affect my computer?

Day 4, 15/9.

Computer froze after i switched it on for ~15minutes. Think it will just randomly freeze regardless of what i am doing. This time, it froze when i am watching a stream on twitch.

Force shut down my pc, cant boot it up, no signal to monitor, mouse and keyboard. Had to unplug power cable and hold power button for a minute before booting back into windows desktop without problems.

For now, i decided to unplug HDD for a few days to see if the problem will go away.

Did you disconnect your WD HDD before you install windows 7 on SSD?

Why not try checking your wd drive for errors using the WD diagnostic tool. If got just rma or buy new one.

Also try swapping sata ports. maybe port spoil

if I recall correctly, WD HDD has about 5 years warranty,
if u plug out the hard disc already, give WD a call: 1800-608 6008

they'll ask you for serial number(feel free to ask them how to find) then they'll tell you whether it is covered under warranty. I remember the place for 1-1 exchange is very very secluded place near boon lay.

hmm, i purposely left my pc on overnight to see if it freezes without the hdd. Sadly, it is still happening, but it can just restart normally without having me to unplug the power cable and hold the power button. So the problem might not be the hdd afterall.

more details: it froze few minutes after i went to sleep. similar to 2 other times that it froze.
TLDR: PC froze 3 times when i'm afk, 1 time when i'm right infront of it.

no idea what is the problem now :s11::s11:
