Hi all:

I've recently been interested in watching my movies in 3D. After some research, I realized it can be cheaper to buy a 3D monitor and watch 3D movies on my PC, as opposed to buying a 3DTV.

But I realized that while searching through the sim lim price list, I can only find 2 or 3 models of 3D monitors (Acer and AOC) available on the price lists. Why is that so? Hasn't 3D monitors been around for at least 2 years already?

Checking the past few COMEX,PC SHOW brochures, I also realised that the last time a 3D monitor was listed was back in PC Show 2012.

Is this because there is little love for 3D monitors in Singapore? Maybe someone can shed some light on this.

True. It's difficult to find one here. When I bought ASUS VG23A last year none of them had stock. Courts took 2 weeks to deliver it after ordering.

Dying trend due to pricing and lack of popularity.
I have a 3d monitor though, but i'm not using it for 3d(only touched 3d glasses once), but more for gaming in 120Hz. I feel that 3d only caters to a niche audience. Also imo, for gaming, 3d is a gimmick that should have died a long time ago. With virtual reality headsets emerging, maybe it can finally be put to rest. VR is definately more immersive after looking at both of them

Then in that case, I better secure myself a 3D monitor soon, before it goes extinct...

Any recommendations? Looking for a 3D monitor not about $400.
So far in the sim lim price list I only see these models:

PHILIPS 273G3DHSW 27" 3DLED 479*
Acer HS244HQ 24” 3D LED......... 388
AOC E2352PHz 23” 3D LED 289

Only the AOC is within my budget..

All of those dun include the 3D kit, which will cost ard $200... not worth getting 3D monitors at all for the purpose of 3D gaming..

I know for sure the AOC one is using a passive 3D system, so don't need NVidia 3D kit. the monitor already comes with 2 glasses.

For watching 3D movies, a definite YES! Most if not all of the 3D movies released in cinemas in the past 3 years, are available in 3D format for playback.

Well, that's what I want a 3D monitor for anyway...

I have just browsed through sim lim... it's a no go.. all the shops do not carry 23" 3D monitors anymore. they only carry 2-3 sets of the 27" 3D monitors.. which are expensive.

care to share your experience. i have been thinking to get one for a very long time.
I use Asus vg278h b4 , the 3d gaming n movie indeed quite good . Bad is 3d glass too heavy , need charging and when watch movie u need to have powerdvd software + alot adjust settings very troublesome. But movie wise asus screen actually very dark when u turn on 3d , makes me very tired on eyes . So I give up , I rather buy a 50 inch passive 3d tv because the glass are so much lighter n comfortable

My ASUS VG23A is passive 3d, so no need to charge. 3D viewing is quite ok, need to be in front of the monitor, slight out of line does distorts the 3D view. For 2D no issue at all.

I saw the VG23 at sim lim today. Only display set left, and the shopkeeper didnt want to sell me that even, cos he says it's been here on display for more than 1 year, and it's on consignment, pending return to Asus.

So sad. the old 3D monitors of 23-24 inches are actually now obsolete.

Was thinking of getting 1 for the purpose of watching 3D movies too but apparently nobody makes 3D monitors in 16:10 ratio n all can only be found in 16:9...

Actually, there's a good number of 3D monitors out there, it's your budget that is going to constrain you. For instance, BenQ's XL line of monitors all support 3D and their monitors are available from Xtreme Solutions. All go for higher than $400 though.

AOC also recently released a 3D-capable G-sync monitor. Even more pricey though.

Also, you should note that the active 3D monitors are very likely Nvidia 3Dvision 2 monitors i.e. you're going to need an Nvidia card. Passive 3D monitors probably allow you to use any card.

And...I think gaming on 3D is great provided you are playing single player games. Using 3D for multiplayer games (especially FPS) is probably going to hamper your gameplay a little since you're capped at 60hz.

why do you need one in 16:10 for movies? I would think 16:9 would be better..

Sorry I mean I would prefer a 16:10 for daily use, but would like it to be able to be 3D capable as well. 16:9 screen like abit short when using it for non-movie watching purposes

I just managed to snag a 2nd hand 3D monitor from a bro in the forums last week =) I must say that I'm very very happy with my new 3D monitor!

I've watched 2 IMAX videos, and avatar in 3D.. I must say that it's really beautiful. I tried watching avatar in 2D, but stopped after 20 seconds, and returned to 3D, because it looked so flat in 2D.

I also tried 5 mins of gears of war in 3D, wow, it's abit dark but it's really nice to play it in 3D as well!

Now I really wonder, why no love for 3D monitors?!? It's the ideal product to have 3D features on! You can sit close to the monitor and watch 3D movies up close, and can do the shoot'em games in 3D.. great stuff!
