Not at all. Quite common to have people eating alone

Why not ?

any recommendations for hotel or hostel or airbnb?

Maybe start by narrowing down your budget, area or what u wanna do. I can throw out recommendations easily but it may be very far from what you want

Well there are sumo and really fat Japanese in Hokkaido and okinawa. Generally it's OK not to conform as a foreigner.

are there areas to avoid at night?

Generally Japan is very safe for solo (female/male) travellers. Even in nishinori (yakuza HQ in Osaka) there is a code of conduct where innocents are not harmed. No violent gun shootouts too.

But common sense would apply and known areas are

Osaka- Kita umeda, nishinori
Tokyo- kabukicho

what is the latest time to return hotel?

Generally hotels don't have curfew. Some front desks don't operate 24 hours, but usually will have someone contactable or nearby.

Hope this helps

Thanks a lot

Actually i haven't got an idea what to do there. Just want to walk around, experience how people live there. Want to do some shopping also. Visit temple and places of interest etc

The rest have answered your questions in front, but here's my take on going solo - why not try it? I got the chance to try it when I was in Japan for my job interview (free days in itinerary), and I found it a lot more "free", in the sense you're free to decide when you want to depart a place for another, or even what you want to do in the area, minus the wait and drag.

It's basically something I'd try again if I have the chance to do so again. Flip side there is the lack of companionship, though it's subjective in this case I must say, since some are comfortable being alone. It's ultimately up to your level of comfort.
