Hey all,

Anyone would be able to suggest the camera which can be used for capturing photos of Northern Lights? Am planning for a trip this coming year end and looking for a camera for the trip.

Northern Lights? You must be going somewhere really cold I suppose? If that is the case, you should try to go for a camera that handles well even with gloves on, have full manual controls, decent low light performance and can operate in the environmental conditions you will be in.

There are many cameras that fit the bill, so some information about what kind of photos of the northern lights you want to take would help. For the average tourist, sometimes even the phone camera is sufficient.

Camera aside, there are also other gear such as lenses and tripods to consider. It may be a hefty investment depending on how much you are willing to spend. Plus, there are some key techniques that one should learn as there is some level of skill involved in shooting the Northern Lights (just like shooting pictures of stars).

You can try Canon EOS 6D or 5D. If it's just to shoot northern lights, you might wanna consider renting it for that period of your travel instead of buying. At least that's what my friend did.

almost any camera that have manual control is suitable.

U need a good tripod too, so dun negligent that. But tripod have to depend on type of camera and lens u have decided to bring

aurora sightings can be a hit or miss, and sometimes on aurora nights if there is bad mist then suck thumb.

even the older generation dslrs give good results, as long as there is manual control and a tripod.

the current mirrorless/dslrs should all do fine

pls be sure to be proficient with the settings prior to setting off for the trip..

Camera sensor should be very happy in the cold. But battery life takes a hit. i usually charge several and keep close to body keep them warm .

From cold outdoors to warmed indoors try to seal them prior to reduce condensation. open when temp equalises. lens fogging is irritating

My friend recently just brought a A6000 with 1670F4, 4 spare batteries and a Gitzo series 1 mountaineer for Aurora. That set is already very sufficient.
