NS spectacles claim

I'm about a month away from my enlistment and I need to go make a pair of specs for NS. What are the criterias that I need to meet in order to be eligible for the claim (i.e. make specs weeks before enlistment etc)?

Whether the system is efficient or not, I believe u can only claim after u enlist and purchase it

Haha I guess I shall have to try my luck then. Read some blog posts from this year that the claim is only available if spec is made from a month before enlistment, then pass receipt to claim in BMT. Btw how cheap can a black plastic frame with normal lenses get? Obviously need to be low maintenance and adequately sturdy. Is less than $80 realistic of a budget?

Why don't u call a spectacle shop to find out? Bet u can get a faster and more accurate answer

don't think it's too much of a hassle to just pass the receipt to the clerk even if end up don't get it

Think it depends on the clerk who handles your request. Anyway u'll definitely need those glasses so just treat it as a bonus if the claim does come through.

I enquired from NS contact email (directed to CMPB) and they say no subsidy for pre-enlistees near enlistment, only for NSFs. I thought to put it out here in case anyone else searches about it.

The actual reply I got:

Please be informed pre-enlistees are required to make normal lenses glasses, transition (photo chromic lenses) are not permitted for usage in the camp. There is no subsidy given for purchase of spectacles before enlistment. Upon enlistment if the spectacles break during training or due to deterioration of eyesight and need to make a new pair; NSFs may then submit their application for subsidy through unit. You may refer to the following website http://www.optometrists.org.sg for the latest list of member outlets for your browsing to prescription of spectacle.

pls don't do during BMT. best is to do it when you are in your unit.

why? chances are your bmt company clerk will be too overwhelmed with loads of admin stuff or too lazy to do it for you, probably will misplace the receipt as well. when you go unit, strength size of coy is much smaller and unit clerk can have the time to do for you.

but if it's a pressing need, then do it during bmt, but periodically ask your sgts (the nicer and helpful ones) so they can check and remind the clerk.

CMPB confirmed that pre-BMT make for NS cannot claim. But I have to make one anyway since my current one is made of titanium, not black and plastic.

Claim from your coy's clerk, or pass to your commanders.

Your spectacles if wanna claim, gotta be 1 month before. If you bought, but over a month from date of purchase already, then you cant claim.

Oh ok gotcha, "black plastic preferred". Still have to get one done since my eyesight has deterioriated slightly since 4 years ago. That's where the black plastic frame comes in then, something cheap and low-maint.

if make 1 month before enlistment, by the time you enlist, expired already haha..

My current spec is, well, not up to spec after 4 years plus it's not even dark coloured and quite flimsy, so I'm not going to ruin it lol. Dunno if I can live without specs in BMT for 2+ weeks too. Just going to make a cheap pair and the subsidy part would not be a big deal la I think.
