Hi everyone, I will be studying in NTU Comp Sci soon.

Just want to ask the seniors who study Comp Sci a few questions.

Is Comp Sci a hard course? I know that this question is a bit hard to answer because it really depends on individuals. Some may find it hard, some may find it easy. But just want to know the statistics like are many people failing modules?

Are there any modules that I must really pay special attention to? e.g Discrete Math, I heard from someone that a lot of people are getting 0 for this module.

How hard is it to maintain a GPA 4.0 out of 5? Sorry this is an important question because I'm taking up a scholarship(not to brag) and this is their requirement, or else I will have to pay them whatever they pay for me + 10% compound interest(per year). I am not really rich so if it is very hard to maintain gpa 4/5, I will consider not taking up the scholarship...

And some questions not related to Comp Sci :

If I stay in a Hall, MUST I participate in the hall activities?

Can I rent a room anytime during the semester? Or it must be rented during the start of semester?

1. Difficulty of a course really boils down to passion and interest. But that said, comp sci is one of the harder courses on par with engineering courses.

2. Again, to maintain a 4.0 is actually not as difficult as it seems as long as you study hard and your interest is there.

3. You dont have to participate in hall activities. In fact, if your grades are not good, I would recommend you NOT to participate at all. First year is guaranteed for all freshmen. But concurrent years will depend on hall points. So if you want to keep staying on your second year onwards you will have to participate to get points. However, iirc scholars get a guaranteed hall for all 4 years. So they dont need to fight for hall points. What scholarship are you under?

4. You can rent when there are spaces lol. And usually there will only be space at the start of the academic year. If throughout the year, people drop out of hall and there are enough vacancies, they will open up applications again. But that is very unlikely to happen. Sometimes in semester 2 there will be another round of applications because some people drop out of hall after semester 1. But the vacancies are small as compared to what is available at the start of sem 1, so your chances to get are slim.

For halls, its not a must to participate.

But not participating will almost guarantee you won't get back hall again in year 2, unless you have some super extreme talents e.g like you can play football like Cristiano Ronaldo, they won't pull you back.

Ya you can only apply for hall before semester 1 starts.

I code till this hour. Is this what you want? :s13:

Anyway, regarding difficulty. I am not sure how to put this across as you also mentioned, it varies individually.

I personally find it relatively hard. Not to mention, I find that most of the course content is totally irrelevant to the working world.

There are like 3 year 2 mod that is heavily on UML diagrams. I am not a fan of UML diagrams... so...

I am curious to know why are you interested in NTU CS? Go to NUS IS/CS or SMU IS if you have a choice. Like seriously.

Hi guys, thanks for the replies...

@Havok_ex : Hmm, the scholarship is called "CSIT Undergraduate Scholarship", if I take up this scholarship, what's "iirc"?

@FappingKing : How about good results? Will they allow you to apply into the hall again in year 2 if my year 1's result is good?

@deathman91 : Actually I have really no idea if taking up Computer Science was a good idea, but then if I don't, I don't think that there are anymore courses I can study in Uni anymore. I studied Computer Engineering in my poly days and I don't really like to deal with hardware, I'm not an ee person(It's either I wire up wrongly or burn my hardware due to silly mistakes lol).

Most course content irrelevant? Can you give some examples?;o I've ran through the NTU Comp Sci subject modules and I find them ok(not including those course code that starts with 'G')

Oh wow....UML, I hate that too especially when it is DB UML designing lol.. But I guess 2 modules in 3 years is ok.

I missed out the opening for the NUS application and I heard NUS' CS is way harder than NTU's one? I mean if I'm rich, I will go for NUS' CS but I'm depending on a scholarship to go for my further studies (which requires me to maintain gpa 4 out of 5)

Well, why not Computer Engineering for you then? Haha I see you wanna avoid hardware stuff. But in NTU CSC we pretty much deal with a handful of hardware mods.. Even have a mod that deal with building a robot to complete a maze... WTF IDK what's the practical use of it.

What G code you are talking about? Our cores all starts with "CZ"

As far as i know results doesnt affect you get hall or not. Only cca points and hall contributions do. Unless you are holding some satki scholarship(i think renaissance engineering people are guaranteed hall stay)....

I hear rumours that the scholar halls lack sportsman and women.
Like, if you can even play any of the lesser-known sports, you stand a high chance of getting rec-ed back there

@deathman91 : Hmm for the robot project, I heard it is like a collaboration between cs and ce students? Well, I've been touching hardware for the 3 years of my poly life and I definitely know that I do not want to touch any of those anymore, unless I have no choice.
G code subjects such as GC0001 Introduction to Sustainability: Multidisciplinary Approaches and Solutions ;o its a GER core.

P.S : I heard that students in CS always take the code from seniors and modify it and submit it to the prof? Is this true?lol (so that we do not have to code from scratch)

@FappingKing & @IWantFriends : I see I see, thanks a lot. Well.. I'm not the type of person who will join sports in school, I would rather conduct my own flexible workout at the gym at most 30min~45mins. Joining sports CCA takes up too much of my time (training time), had a bad experience during poly days, always reach home close to midnight and next day have early lecture. It's damn tiring.

Yeah I've stayed hall during year 1.

Really not for me. Many activities and events still have to show face. Then really leave me no time for study, ended up skipped many lectures and lessons, and first semester did badly. Once i moved out my results improved exponentially:spin:

TS here is my advice:

- Research the course that you are going to enrol, carefully! (Seriously, most of the students who enter into a particular course HAVE no idea what is going on. This shows they have no planning at all)

- If you are from poly, you have to understand that the pace in university is way faster than poly. Be prepared for it.

- Don't just apply because someone said this course is better than the next. You choose the course, you strive for it. If you didn't do well, don't complain! Keep on trying!

- If you are weak at certain subject like maths. Buck up!

- Do not procrastinate, have a good daily plan (time management skill). Knowing how to manage your time is very important.

Since you are a scholar, this shows there is some values in your character, skills, etc. I wish you all the best!

Yes, that's the one. CE and CSC student team tgt... to do something that is not practical at all. Oh those.. GER CORE are like some online mods and some english communication mods.

Well you can take all those report and/or source code from seniors. But some mods they do change the application requirement or it's a totally different topic.

I think really, you will gain better knowledge of CS in NUS Computing or SMU IS

@IAmZTX : Yes, sort of doing research by asking people who have graduated from comp sci NTU(including asking here), well, I have a passion in programming, mainly malicious programming.

My diploma only allows me to go to comp sci & comp eng. If there are other choices available, I wouldn't dare to go because I do not have the basic foundation of that course(poly level).

Math has always been pulling my grades down in Poly, I can say I'm bad at it but since you said Uni is going at a much faster pace, I doubt I can handle it man.. lol I need a lot of time to absorb Math.. Kinda having an early start now by watching online lectures uploaded by MIT, not sure how much it will help though.

@deathman91: Oh.. thank god GER CORE mods are online. Well, I really hope not to take my senior's code but to code from scratch lol.. but if I'm left with no choice then I will take my senior's code for REFERENCE xD. I just spoke with my lecturer and yes, she said NUS Comp Sci you will learn more and there's a lot of theory too, while NTU Comp Sci will have lesser theory but more hands on. She said that most of the poly grads will choose NTU because they are more used to hands on work rather than goign through theory.

Well, to be honoest, my main issue here now is to find out whether to take up a scholarship. The scholarship requires me to get gpa 4/5 and if I don't, I will have to pay back the full amount they paid for me + 10% compound interest per year. I don't come from a well family so 10% is really a lot to me to risk. So here I am asking if Comp Sci in NTU is hard or not. Of course in NTU, I will learn lesser about Comp Sci compared to NUS, but at least what I learnt in NTU is considered knowledge too!

No matter which university you apply for. There is maths, no way you can run away from it. Since you have time now, just prepare. It will serve u well when u get in. In terms of difficulty, it will be harder than you expect.

Hi TS!

I have also applied and gotten into NTU CS ^^ for year 2017, cause currently serving NS. Have tried for NUS CS but the IGP shot up so high last year (for A'levels).

Regarding the scholarship you mentioned, only able to apply when you completed semester 1?

Glad to have finally met someone with similar passion/interest and enrolling into the same college! Hope to hear further!

Cheers!
