In CE:
1) You will be touching Java & C++ (together with Assembly language). So Year 1 is mostly java... Year 2 C++ + Assembly and got 1 very huge scale java project involving around 60++ people per "company".

2) We got a module called DDP... is to do a micro-controller mouse (Robotics). And we need to do alot of hardware module.... (Computer Sci is do website, so ur .net knowledge come to good use.)

3) For CE we dun really program software purely in year 2. We need to build the hardware and together programing the software.

4) And last but not least....Uni Math is killing all Poly kia

Above statement are base on current Year 2 Sem 2 modules.

Welcome to SCE!

1) For now, NTU students all must do IA, Industrial Attachment such that you need 1 full semester to do Internship. There is NO direct Year 2 anyway, unlike other poly peers.

Some Poly don't have compulsory Internship and it was either FYP or Internship but not both. But here is NTU.

2) Because of that reason, practically all Comp Science / Engineering student from my batch (AY2014-15) will NOT be able to graduate within 3 years, but 3.5 years instead.

3) For overseas exchange you have following options:

A) GEM Discoverer. Most likely $ shows you the world as this program is mainly for cultural immersion / work-study (Overseas Internship?) and such and it could be as short as 2 to as long as 20 weeks. Some of them take place during your vacation, but probably you have reservist obligation. (Now you may want to consider keng in NS, to make it PES C / E and siam reservist?)

B) GEM Explorer. This is the exchange (Last for 1 full semester, but some may eat up in between of 2 semesters like those in Germany due to different the new AY in Germany is of different month compared to Singapore) people talking about. General cut off point is CGPA 3.5 at the time of application except some Asian (Regional) university, they allow CGPA to be 3.3. However, that is just the bare minimum and you need to face stiff competition from your peers, possibly seniors who are vying for that finite amount of spots overseas.

PS: Exchange also not suka want to go then go one, you need to do homework and plan out which modules you want to clear subject to overseas uni got similar approved mod by NTU or not. The procedure can be daunting. Sad to say, SCE modules are quite hard to match in overseas uni, perhaps other than electives which are mostly exempted.

A lot of SCE students who go for exchange opted for USA (Competition is fierce and not surprisingly, CGPA 4 or above then stand a good chance) or Sweden. There are other good places to go like South Korea. Anyway exchange is highly recommended to freeze GPA such that if you are not confident in a mod, go exchange and clear it (And avoid getting things like C or even D or even F after freshmen year) so that it won't affect you badly. (Another case of how $ makes the world go around.)

As for China / Taiwan or Hong Kong, I didn't hear any such case probably because the number of modules could be mapped there is significantly lower or the general negative impression of Ah Tiongs. But we have a lot of lecturers come from these countries, and also India and even one from Soviet Union (Google CZ2003 for that).

Oh ya, one last point: The exchange application period is currently adjusting and revamping too. This year, the application period was like end Jan (After 1st semester in new AY) for the entire next AY (AY 2015-16).

This means that if I want to go for an exchange on 2016 (Sem 2 of AY 2015-2016), I had to apply for it in this Jan too.

It is known that they will shift it to October for the subsequent application period and I am not sure if this will affect your chance to apply exchange (GEM Explorer) in your 2nd year since you have not take the exam for 1st sem and thus do not have the CGPA yet.

Assuming that is true, then you will have to postpone your exchange to Year 3, which is theoretically possible but difficult to do so.

Because you have certain modules like FYP, that last for 2 entire semesters and a module call MDP (Google it, something to do with designing robots to go through a maze) which requires a Year 3 standing to do (Probably after you have cleared 3 or 4 semesters).

So if you clear things like FYP on Year 2 Sem 2, then it will eat up your Year 3 Sem 1 (Since it took 2 full consecutive semesters) and thus, reducing your choice of overseas exchange placement (I am not too sure which semester has more placement for SCE). Similarly, if you do on Year 3 Sem 2, then your Internship will have to shift it to Year 2 Sem 2 at earliest.

So as I say, it is theoretically possible to do a full exchange on Year 3 itself, but how you are going to plan things like FYP and Internship could be a challenge. I am a NTU Computer Engineering student switched to Computer Science, but the first 2 years has a lot of modules are common ones.

I missed my chance to go for Exchange in Year 2 due to GPA and the desire to stay in Hall again (Year 1 is usually easier to get Hall Points compared to Year 2 students because of academic workload).

Last but not least, since you have 2 years to go before entering NTU, there will be a lot of changes. Like my batch is the first having the GPA Exemption for Freshmen Year (So it is better to Fail than getting a D in first year first attempt of a particular module, up to 6 of it. But I still got a D for Engineering Maths , which itself is splitting into 2 modules in the coming intake) and the course structure itself is changing over the years.
