NTU COMPUTER SCIENCE - no direct entry year 2

Hi guys, I am from ngee ann poly Electronic and Computer Engineering, i recently got accepted to NTU computer science but there was no direct entry to second year. Even though, my diploma is relevant to this degree course.

When I called them, I was told that there was no direct entry to year 2 for both computer science and computer engineering in NTU but I would only get exempted for certain modules.

Kindly advise what I can do as I doesn't want to waste another 4 years studying. And I would like to clarify, whether exempted modules will still be 4 years? Thanks so much.

Depends on how many modules you are exempted from. Traditionally, people take 4-5 modules per semester. So if you get 5 modules exempted, you can squeeze your degree to 3.5 years. You can also opt for an Accelerated Bachelor's Programme.

Polytechnic students with relevant diploma get exemption of 32AU.

And most poly students are 3.5 years. is that true?

Because Computer Science/Engineering programme is a direct honours programme, direct entry to year 2 means that you will not be eligible for Third Class Honours even though your result is in the same range. Instead, you will only get Pass with Merit. (NTU GPA and Honours Information). Honours aside, it is largely due to the fact that there are Year 1 courses which you are required to clear which cannot be exempted. For example, amongst others, Discrete Mathematics, and Engineering Mathematics, which forms a bulk of pre-requisite for other courses.

In NTU, all Computer Science/Engineering students will be enrolled into Year 1. Based on the number of exemptible courses, and your academic result, the total Academic Units (known as credits in poly) earned will determine how fast you are promoted. For example, if you have been exempted X AUs and you earned Y AUs in the first semester, and X+Y is an amount, Z, which qualifies you for the next Study Year, you will be promoted in the next semester, regardless of the academic year. In short, study year is not the same as academic year. This is mainly to grant you eligibility to take up courses meant for the next study year. This is what was meant by Year 1, Year 2, Year 3, or Year 4. To put it simply, if you pass all your courses in year 1, and met the minimum AUs to be eligible for Year 2, you will be promoted in the next semester even though your candidature is only 1 semester.

The new curriculum, however, has an additional option for IO (Industrial Orientation). Under this curricular structure, your entire stay is 3 years. If you are interested in the longer Industrial Attachment, then your candidature is 3.5 years. For full structure, visit Computer Science Curriculum
