CPE204 Discrete Mathematics and Algorithms - SuperOrange

First part of the course is on discrete mathematics. This part is quite abstract for most poly students. Foreign students and JC students think it's very easy and they always "An Qiu" at poly students. Second part is on Algorithms. Analysis of algorithms performance like sorting, searching etc. Only lecture and tutorial and there is 1 quiz towards the end of the semester. This quiz is very important

FE1008 Computing - siandiao

What is termed to be the nemesis of most Common Engineering students, this course is actually not as bad as what some idiotic CEE seniors made it out to be. It's all about C programming (why don't they just call it C programming?). Yes, programming may sound scary for most, but seriously, thanks to those CEE seniors, the lecturers have began to mark more and more leniently. In fact, even if you can't come up with the exact syntax, and begin to write pseudocode, as long as the structure is correct, you'll get a B+. That's how lenient it is. Not easy to fail, unless you really choose to believe those CEE seniors and completely give up on this subject even before you begin. Tip is to think of how things in daily life works, using all the basic C programming statements. Quite fun to think about it actually. For those that do casual programming before, you can consider this subject a free A+ for you :D

Oh yes, all tutors will give you ridiculously easy programming questions for you, except for 1 who will give you ridiculously difficult ones. I cannot mention his name here as he surfs HWZ as well, so PST me :o

BS1004 (was FE1004) Life Sciences - siandiao

One of the most poorly planned core in Common Engineering, this course is a bane to many. This is the only first year core where for each week, different lecturers will lecture. Because of this, the coordination of lessons are so bad, that it is even worse than any of the STS electives (e.g. Astro, Bio in Pop Media, etc). What's worse is that for their quizzes, there will be some questions that does not come from the lecture notes, e.g. the infamous "How many plant species are there in Botanic Gardens?". From the quiz and the online tutorials, it can be inferred that the lecturers are expecting us students to wiki at every single bio term that appears in the notes. Or buy the expensive $60 textbook. However, it must be emphasized that those that are better in memory can excel in this subject, if they rote memorise all the answers to the online tutorials enough. Those with eidetic memory are guaranteed A+.

Oh yes, the exam is 70 MCQs. It may sound easy, but it's not

FE1001 Physics I - siandiao

Physics I is mainly about mechanics, fluids, and thermodynamics (yeah, all these are actually mechanics). Some may find this subject scary, some may find it great. Personally, I found my paper quite manageable. Tip is to really buy the recommended textbook and practise the textbook questions. Try to link to why the answer is arrived like that, and you'll be fine. There isn't much calculus on this one, but it is very important that you must know which point to take when calculating moments. This, can only be done through practice, practice, and more practice. I can't emphasize more on this. It's an open book, but seriously, the open book has no use. However, do print out a wiki article about pulleys - they like to come out pulleys, since it's not very much covered in any of the textbooks. 4AU subject, tread carefully. MAE, CEE, or ENE students must pass this; it's a prereq module for some year 2 cores.

Frankly speaking, do not worry about not finishing the exam paper, as many people won't.

FE1002 Physics II - siandiao

This is about Optics and Electromagnetism. For this, you WILL deal with calculus, especially with electrics and magnetism, like define where to take the small element of dx blah blah blah. Once again, practice, practice, practice. Get into your head as to how to apply calculus to solve the problems. Also, quantum may look difficult, but it's quite simple, as if they want to make it slightly more difficult, they'll be teaching the equivalent of a year 3 EEE technical elective already. All in all, it's easier than FE1001. EEE students must pass this, as it is a prereq for some of the year 2 cores.

FE1006 Mathematics I - siandiao

Wee! A refresher course of Maths C in JC and also some things learnt in F Maths! Just recall what you learnt in JC, along with some new concepts for those that didn't take F Maths, and all will be fine. ORD guys may find it difficult to recall, it's okay.

FE1007 Mathematics II - siandiao

This is all where it gets slightly more tuff. There will be PDEs, Series, Multiple Integrals, and ODEs. Once again, getting the concept is the most important. PDE: you've to know why gradient vector and how it works. Multiple Integrals too: how to define line of integration. ODE: why certain techniques like the Bernana Equation works. For this, one word of advice: practise, until you get the concept into your head.

Most people will cry after doing the exam paper, as virtually all cannot finish on time, even the FTs. To me, this paper is set in such a way that nobody can finish on time, so don't worry. I left like 20 marks blank, 10 marks confirm wrong, and I got A-. It'll definitely be moderated

CPE207 Software Engineering - SuperOrange

There is this mega project called Public Bus Simulator to be done by a company. The company consists of 7 groups also known as subsystems. Each subsystem has 1 or 2 group leaders and has different num of team members. Towards the end of the course, every subsystems are to be integrated and do a lot of testing. Throughout the labs, u will get to understand the software development cycle. U will learn UML which is the most important modeling language in this course. There is 1 quiz in this course and individual project report to be submitted.

CPE208 Instrumentation and Data Acquisition - SuperOrange

Another one of the easiest modules but it's time consuming.
First part of the course mainly deal with different type of amplifers. Second part of the course is data acquisition. The time consuming part is the lab assignments. There is 1 report on amplifier to be handed up. Another is a program written in assembly code for data acquisition. Again, u have to start this programming asap as lab will be fully occupied during peak period. Individual lab assessment by the lecturer will be conducted to ensure every student program code are not duplicated. :D

Very easy module. u only need to do one MCQ quiz during one of the lecture, and one exam.
Exam is very, very simple. They show you one hand-drawn picture, then u need to reconstruct the crime scene. (just write compo:D) then the rest is MCQ.
during my time they just changed the venue to the Nanyang Auditorium, which can seat 1000+ students, making this module having the highest capacity in NTU. So, this popular module should be quite easy to get.
there's quite a few guest lecturers. and they will show u quite a few pics of dead people. (some quite gross) just close ur eyes during these moments if u feel uncomfortable, not important anyway.
btw, even though i have only gone for the first few lectures and pom the rest(ppl pom to go gai gai. i pom to chiong labs  ), I still got an A-.
So, I'll urge u all to take this module when u get, sure can get jiamtaos one :D
