Hi, I'd like to say that this course is not at all worth it for your preparation efforts, anxiety waiting for application outcome, etc.

I was just like you guys last year. Now all I have is frustration and regret. I'd like to share some problems I found in this master program:

1. Classmates:
Disclaimer: there are good or even exceptionally good people in the program, no doubt. But the majority of them are like this:

- Lots and lots of them are so called "foreign talents" (fyi, I'm also an FT myself, not Singaporean) from Myanmar, China, India with little to none functional English in an academic environment. I'll give you an example. When writing a term paper, these people just dump "copied & pasted" fragments of text from somewhere else into the paper. Their share of the writing would be completely incomprehensible. Yet you can't ask them to rewrite coz they would say they have completed the responsibility, just that their ability is not "up to the mark". Whole bunch of BS.

- Many of them have absolutely no clue on coding. Simple things like source control systems (svn, git, blah blah) are foreign languages to them. Their popular excuses for not coding in a project: "I have never written an end-to-end program before, just modifying" or "I'm not a coder; I'm a sys admin, a manager,etc." or they will write banana code and you'll have to correct it in the end.

- Lousy presentation skills couple with incomprehensible spoken English (sorry to say this, but even some Singaporeans there speak English like sh*t). I'm not at all against Singlish. In fact, I really like it. But please, don't do it in a presentation.

- And of course, plenty of other excuses for not doing projects like family, work, and so on.

- The things that upset me is that the school seems to be very stringent on screening candidates, yet these people are the majority there. I don't want to sound being full of myself but I really wonder if the degree cert I get from this program would lower my reputation? :O

Syllabus: Very rigor. Most courses have about 2-3 assignments + 2 presentations + exam
Faculty: The professors here deliver their lessons exceedingly well. Most Profs are approachable though they expect a lot on their students.

Classmates: In every university, there are definitely some who are not as strong. At least for all the courses I have taken so far, majority of my classmates are technically-inclined (at least for those who have an IT/CompSci degree), fast learners (they pick things up blazing fast) and present their works pretty well.

So far, I did not experience any problems with my assignment teammates (many are Part-timers and they do their due diligence). The quality of the assignment deliverable is of professional standard.

ntu graduate admission 2012

hi. I have got interview mail for Knowledge Management, which is my second preference. Though Info systems was my first preference. Is that I didnt get through for Info systems. But my undergraduate degree suits the Info systems to the great extent and currently having 2 yrs related IT work experience. Is there any consideration for international applicant to get shortlisted without interview and written test ? I dunno anything abt knowledge mgmt. I wanted Info Systems since it suits my work exp too. totally confused..

infosys has always been more competitive than km. if u look at past applicant profiles, 2 years exp and a relevant degree is not much. esp if u r an international applicant.

Well I wouldn't exactly say that IS is more competitive than KM since both are in different focus and perspectives. KM is more multi-disciplinary as compared to Info-sys. If u think KM is in any way easier to get in or easier to do well, you are dead wrong. The fact that the number of places for KM is lesser tells a lot about the academic rigours tied to the program. Fyi, doesn't mean you are good in IS means you are good in KM. It depends on the faculty to size you up during the interview and assign you to the program which they think you are suitable. Btw, if info-sys is really an interest to any applicant in WKWSCI, you have 2 slots to choose cross electives in other MSc even if you are in KM which is precisely what I intend to do.

well skychaser did say that he got an interview for KM but not IS right? it seems very common for people to not qualify for IS, but qualify for KM - so from this, most would infer that KM is easier to qualify than IS. (think about it - he managed to qualify for KM even without prior experience in KM? hmmm... says a lot isn't it?)

how does number of places correspond to academic rigour? there are fewer places for KM because there are consistently fewer applicants for KM every year and also there is less demand for KM professionals (in comparison to infosys). NTU decides on the size of each course according to industry demand (if they expand the intake beyond industry demand, then there'll be a glut of unemployed grads). a course can have a large intake and still be rigorous - the two are not mutually exclusive.

If you do not know what does KM do or what does it entails in industry, I suggest you do your homework before commenting.

Thank you for your interest in the Master's programme offered by the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information, Nanyang Technological University. Congratulations! Your application has been shortlisted for MSc in Information Systems and you have been selected to attend an interview with our faculty members.

Before the interview, you will be taking a brief writing test at the same venue (see below). No prior preparation is necessary for the test. It focuses on communication and critical thinking. For the written essay test, you will be tested on your overall English written ability and your ability to think logically and argue coherently. A sample question could be: "Do you feel that we are doing enough to slow down global warming?" (This is only an example).

Since the test will be conducted in a big group, it is crucial that you are very punctual. The written essay test has to be completed in 30 minutes after which you will be interviewed by our faculty. Overall, the test/interview process could take up to 2 hours.
