NTU or SMU?

Hey guy!! I have receive an offer from NTU mathematics with economics and SMU social science.. Anyone has any opinion abt this two course and which one should i take up?.? ah.. in dilemna... I failed my GP btw and is really lucky to have offers... As i failed GP, i am afraid that i may not be able to perform well in social science.. However, i like it a lot. On the other hand, i am not bad in mathematics as well.. so ... uh... pls give me some kind advise.. thanks!!! oh ya.. i am also concern abt job prospect?

No offence but not much prospects for smu social science upon graduation.

.. yes. SMU allows double degree only for student who perform well in their 1st year... But just solely based on the social science degree, can i seek for more opinions? SMU Social science VS NTU mathematical economics

Its unwise to go into social science without a good GP foundation. Arts and SS courses are usually heavily based on essays. If you cant write, you will have a disadvantage. However, Im not sure about SMU, I hear its more geared towards presentations and as such, it might have less emphasis on essay examinations.

What about the career options? Because I'm intending to join NIE after SMU SoSS. And seeing one of the replies is that the career options for SoSS grads are quite limited, kinda really make me considering this course.

Yes. career option seem to be really important.. I think i will struggle without a good GP foundation too... *Sign... Thanks for ur advice @souppress, i tot u are taking chinese? so now u going to try NIE? I agree that smu social science seem to have limited career option. So, i have a 2nd thought abt joing SMU SOSS too... and soupress, are u from JC or poly? Do u have good chinese foundation?

I'm going to appeal for NTU Chinese when 15 May arrives
I'm still waiting for NIE to call me up for interview :/
I'm from poly, my O levels for Chinese is A1, no higher MT cos my school doesn't offer HMT to NA students

I take up chinese in JC thought, I got a C for chinese literature :/ i really feel that i dun have talent for languages so decided to take up mathematics with econs since both my math and econs score A so u really wanna give up SMU SOSS offer? If that's the case, all the best!! hope we can be school mate !! haha

Pick the one that you like more! However in terms of job prospects wise, mathematics with economics may be more appealing

You already have an answer in your mind right now! You're doubting the answer in your heart because you're shackled by the thoughts of society of what is deemed "successful" - which in most cases are the belief of the degree that will provide them the highest dollar value.

Choose the course that will help you in fufilling your passion and interest, not the course that people categorized as 'popular/high demand in society". There is no definite success in a particular course but there is a definite success when you do what you love doing! 10 years down the road, you will not regret the decision you've made when you follow your heart.

I want to end off with what Steve Jobs said "Don't be trap by dogmas which is the results of living in the thinking of others. Don't let the opinion of others drown out your inner voice". I hope you get to read this and smile 10 years from now.

i wouldnt say career options are limited for soc sci grads, if you are looking at non-technical fields, there are abundant options. i have two close friends who grad from smu soc sci, one is now working as HR of a bank, another one is in the management trainee prog of a reputable retail chain. according to them, its very interesting but its preferable that you have a certain level of eng lang skills cos there will be readings and writings to be done.
