NTU vs NUS (Psych)

Hello all! Would be happy if y'all could help me out a lil bit with some advice

I need to choose between:
NUS- double degree life sciences x psych for 5 years
NTU- psych + 2nd major biological sciences for 4 years
For those who ask why not NUS FASS: lack of interest in half of the humanities and not an excellent humanities student so I'm quite... wary of the first year in FASS otherwise might have taken double major instead for 4 years. I mean I probably still can appeal and change to FASS but... I don't think I'll enjoy my first year.

I intend on taking post-grad studies which may be under NUS.

I feel like I'm leaning towards NTU since Hons is guaranteed + lower competition (sorry, kinda rude) thus more opportunities in college and less stress maybe + 1 year shorter + scholarship + the degree in life sciences via NUS is very extra lol.

However I'm mostly concerned about the facilities- if I can get a better education in NUS, would that be better? It is more established and has much more experience in teaching psych. I'm just wondering if it'll matter because undergrad is our foundation for post-grad, or if it's insignificant precisely because I'll be studying post-grad...

Otherwise, there's also the fact that studying in NUS might help me gain some connections that may be useful for entering Masters/Med due to affiliation or prof recommendation etc (although I'm sure if I do well enough in NTU it won't be an issue).

Scared of inaccessibility too: definitely hall-ing (possibly all 4 years), but I intend on focusing on my acads so I'm afraid I can't get enough points to remain in hall. I'm not a study bug la so cfm will participate in whatever I can but... yeah. Kiasu Singaporean. Worry. Haha.

Also is there any kind soul going into NTU psych/going for the SSS reception thing coming Sat and willing to adopt me! I have no friends lmao.

As good as NUS and NTU are, neither are not very good for post-grad social sciences. A bulk of what makes NUS and NTU great on the rankings are their hard sciences, engineering and to some extent business courses. If you intend to do a post-grad in psych, please do it somewhere better overseas. Almost any local grad with a second-upper can get into a humanities or social science masters programme at NUS or NTU. It's actually not that hard. It's pretty much guaranteed if you have a first.

If you are quite set on post-grad research, a double degree is quite useless. Heck, even a double major may be useless. What you will need at the end of the day is a first class, a good GRE score, good recommendations and if possible some actual research work.

You are right that at the post-grad level, your undergrad will be quite insignificant. At that point, it would be your published papers that matter, not whether you are from NUS or NTU. In terms of resources, you should check out which university allows you to do publishable research at an undergrad level. NTU has the URECA programme which lets you do research and write a paper under a supervisor in your second and third year if your grades are good. Some of the papers that are churned out actually get published depending on how good they are. Its rare that they get picked up by bigger journals, but at least you get a shot. I'm not sure if NUS has something equivalent, but you should check it out.

Both allow you to be a psychologist however NTU Biological Sciences allow you to become a TCM practitioner. NUS Life Sciences are nothing unless you upgrade for higher education to be a Researcher.

So I will recommend you to take up NTU.

I think for fass and life science there's alot of memorisation involved and believe if you can do well for one you should be able to do well for the other.

Do note that for double degree, the CAP (gpa equivalent) is calculated separately. So got psych mods and life science mods will have different caps. I recommend doing a double major, and just go to FASS since you are going to do psych.

I think for NUS generally not difficult to get honours and besides, if you want to do graduate studies you must already aim for honours in the first place; I don't see how nus can make it difficult for you.

Ah 0.0 that is news to me, I haven't researched much about post-grad yet considering I can't even decide about my undergrad studies. T_T

I wasn't referring to reputation, but rather the quality of education. I'm afraid that NTU, being much newer to the field of psychology, may be unable to provide the same standard of education as NUS which has been playing the game for a longer time, which may affect my further studies.

I think the school teaches TCM, not that NTU biological sciences lets me become a TCM practitioner. Anyway, I'm not interested in TCM so I highly doubt I'd become a TCM practitioner thus this is not a point of consideration for me but thank you anyway

I'd think that FASS subjects would be rather different from hard science...? Regardless, I'm not interested in over half of the subjects and I'm afraid that that'd pull down my overall grade even with the S/U option NUS provides. Outside of academia, as a result I think I wouldn't enjoy my first year in FASS.

I'm not worried about hons, but about opportunities. In order to attain opportunities I want I'd definitely need to be one of the top students, and it may be easier to achieve that in NTU. NUS also has a larger cohort size, further increasing competition. If so, I could devote the extra time I'd need to study in NUS to doing something outside of academic matters in NTU e.g. volunteering, internships... that'd increase my "stats" outside of pure academics. But of course both schools are academically competitive.

Yeah you can PM me. I don't mind. I went for psych and social work talks and after that, I flipped my choices and social work is now my preferred major over psych.
