Hellohello, I'm graduating from poly (comp eng) this year. Looking through the courses offered by NUS SOC and quite intrigued by the modules that they offer for business analytics. It's quite a new course so I can't find lots of infomation anywhere..

I went through this thread about NUA BS pros and cons (not enough post count to post links lol) but still not provided enough information cause that thread died halfway. :(

If I'm not wrong.. we get to deal with big data in this course. Since big data is a recent hype (or overhype), will it affect the usefulness of this course in the long run once the hype settles? Take for eg. 3D printing.. it was a hype many years back, now rarely u hear people talking about it. (??)

Also, a very noob question.. since it's has got to do with data - data mining & analysis. Will it be affected by data privacy? :s22:

in short, because this course is quite specialized, is it stable yet?

i think the course is more rojak rather than specialized by mixing in so many modules from different discipline making u a jack of all trades but master of none...

n i think the course is more geared towards producing business analyst rather than data scientist (which typically are phd holder)

if u wan to play with data analytics.. doing a double major/deg in statistics and computing may be a better option... i think developing technical skills will be more important than gaining business acumen which u can pick on while on the job.

n i dun think there is any data privacy in singapore one lar.. even in the US i think big data and data privacy is still a very grey area. and sometimes not all data have privacy issue... especially if the data is in-house or if the data are things like sensor input along the production line.

jus my opinion from my very brief exposure to this field.

Ok thanks! Then may I ask what's the difference between a business analyst and a data scientist? as much as I know, business analyst will help company gain insights from data, no?

a biz major using excel to find mean, standard deviation, plotting bar chart or pivot table and throwing out words like 'synergy', 'sustainability' or 'paradigm shift' is using data in a business setting too... but that dosnt mean they are data scientist

if u wan to know the difference jus google it loh

some table i found online:

u will almost nv touch big data.. if u do, its touch and go kind..

to be a data scientist, u will have to go masters at least NUS MSc Business Analytics Programme

and are u good in mathematics? if u are not, you are probably gonna kill urself in faculty of science.

ahhh, alright. thanks guys!

my maths isn't super strong, but I don't mind doing it tho. hahaha.

now hearing some feedbacks from you all.. feeling really uncertain to apply for this. it's like a really broad-based kind of learning. In uni level, should I still go for the jack-of-all-trades kind of learning or just focus on 1-2 areas, and why? (eg, BA offers quite a bit of stats vs pure stats course in school of science)

as u go higher, u will become more and more specialized, this world dun need generalist, we need specialist.
