My friends are all discouraging me saying engineering is really hard and i have to mug and i wont have any time to hang out and enjoy my campus life, biz or arts students can party or go out but engine students have to mug daily and also must sacrifice sleep. Is that true?

I think get ur agenda rite? r u there to study or r u there to party? :s8:

An Engineering graduate can study higher education in Business related field while a Business graduate maybe can study higher education with a very good results in Engineering related field but mostly Business graduate did not or cannot study higher education in Engineering related field due to normal or poor results & etc reasons.

An Engineering graduate can work in Business related field but a Business graduate can never work in Engineering related field.

If there are 10 Business related jobs in the market but 20 Business graduate, what will happen to the remaining 10 Business graduate?

If there are 20 Engineering related jobs in the market but only 10 Engineering graduate, what will happen to the remaining 10 Engineering related jobs?

The remaining 10 Business graduate may study Engineering degree to get the remaining 10 Engineering related jobs in the market.

Question 1: Are the Business graduate wasting their opportunity cost such as time & money to study a Engineering degree?

Question 2: Will the remaining 10 Engineering related jobs in the market wait for the remaining 10 Business graduate to graduate with a Engineering degree or employer will just employ foreigners to fill up the remaining 10 Engineering related jobs in the market asap?

Answer 1: Well they would be. But most business grads wouldnt want to enter engine. Many says engine is a dead end career and many engineers have switched careers.

Answer 2:They would get FTs. And FTs are the reason why the pay for engineer so low :/

1) Engineers change job because they are doing both admin & physical work & some are in the hot sun or high risk environment compare to Business related job getting same salary but sit inside air con office doing only admin work. The most important things is if business related job cannot work out, they can go back to engineering related job any time.

2) But business related jobs in Singapore now are with all those foreign competitors like PRs, E-Pass holders & etc? Are you sure they are not cheaper & more valuable (experiences, skill & knowledge) then you?

No matter wat field u choose, u have to move up the corporate ladder. no1 will stay as engineer for 10 yrs, as they move up, they will become project managers or department heads. thats y there is a career change.

Another example is accountancy, the life as an accountant is not any better than engineers. U can check the starting pay of accountants. one of the lowest and the working hours is very long. The very fact that accountancy grads are in high demand is due to the high turn over rate. A lot of ppl cannot stand the long working hours, thus decided to switch career. And those who stayed on will move up the corporate ladder, as senior auditor and so on.

There will be only 1 Manager (HOD) position is an Organization for 1 candidate to get the job & the rest of them will remain as Senior Engineer or move up to a Manager title position such as Project Manager. So it is hard to move up the corporate ladder. Even if there is a career change, you may restart as a Executive with a payout before you move up to Senior Executive but hard to move up to HOD position unless they are like Big4 with 'auto promotion system'.

There are jobs such as Managing Agent in some company where they needs to standby & respond to customer site 24/7. Their paper work, OT & etc will not lose to an accountant. But compare to Big4 as years of service go down the road, those accountant will earn much more then those Managing Agent because of 'auto promotion system'.

Hi all, can someone who is currently in engineering or had graduated advise on this? Which has better learning experiences? Better prospect? Easier to study in? Better environment?

This is a very difficult question to answer. You have got to be more specific, which engineering are you talking about? If you are talking about engineering in general, I think NUS is better just because they have better world recognition. All that load of rubbish that NTU engineering is more practical, is a **** bull of crap. At the end of the day, companies tend to look at GPA at the end of your education in UNI, at least a 4.0/5.0. And then, all that matters is how well your interview goes.

Which has better learning experience?
Personally, I think none. The Engineering teaching standard in Singapore is really bad. I think I learned more, studying by myself rather than listening to some China professor teaching with incomprehensible English.

Better prospect?
The last career fair I attended, there were quite a number of companies looking for ME and EEE graduates. Not much for the rest. Oh Computer engineers/science has quite a number of jobs too.

Easier to study in?
All course content is generally difficult, but its the competition that you should be looking at. Let's say if half your cohort are foreign scholars, then its gonna be pretty difficult to pass, let alone score. But from what I heard, NTU Mechanical Engineering is not so competitive, not a lot of foreign scholars and straight A students.

Better Environment?
I don't understand. All are generally the same, seriously the outlook on engineers in Singapore is looking very bleak. A word of warning, NTU is like an island by itself, super inaccessible to anywhere else in Singapore.

My advice?? Coming from a EEE final year student in NTU, study what you are really interested in. Find out what your core modules are about. I have met people who are doing really well even though they came in with grades like CCC. But that is because they have interest in it, and study hard every day. So all the best in your choices.

Anyone in Mechanical Engineering then?

I got an offer from NUS already, NTU should come any time soon. My grades barely made it (lower than 10th percentile but still got the offer) for NUS, that's why I'm rather worried that I won't be able to cope in NUS. Would NTU be a better choice? Distance won't be a problem though. NUS just looks like a livelier place to study in :)

The 10th percentile for mech eng is 77.5 and so you are almost 4 points lower. Woah, you are really lucky :)

Anyway, I have been accepted into NUS common engineering.
