NVME dock and heatsink

Just to share, I got the Samsung NVME 990 Evo Plus 2TB drive to use as an external drive temporarily until my next build. Without knowledge I bought a cheap sub $10 acrylic case. According to Crystaldiskinfo the temperature soared to 90 plus degrees with normal use, so I stopped using it.

I then got the following JEYI dock and case bundle from AliExpress. The dock has a 10GBps 3.1 Gen 2 connection. The heatsink is a full aluminum body, with a good weight, and can be used with a motherboard later I think. The dock is also made of metal and has a nice rubber pad at the bottom.

The idle temperature is less than 40, and barely touches 50 under load. So heat dissipation seems pretty good. But I also think the heat is lower due to better management from the controller.

FYI most NVME GEN 4 SSD are hot especially Samsung ones.
If you want a external SSD that doesn't generate so much heat.
Should have went with Samsung external SSD instead.

Price is more or less the same with internal NVME SSD.
Models like Samsung T7 the internal SSD uses NVME bus.
BTW most NVME SSD will thermal throttle when it gets too hot.

Thanks. But as mentioned in my first post, this is only a temporary solution. In future this SSD will become an internal drive.

Heat, anyway if you think what you doing is correct than continue.

As long as keep below 70 degree it will be fine even after a yr.

The max operating temperature is 70. So less than 50 (46 to be exact), I think it should be ok.

I believe the controller makes a big difference for this SSD.

If hardware like Gen 4 SSD is use this way I would say is wrong.

Cuz no matter how big the heatsink you put on it, Gen 4 SSD by design
runs hot. Is not intended to use a external storage, unless you get Gen 3
like Samsung 980 (Non-pro) than OK no issue.

I do have few Samsung 980 Pro died with or without heatsink.
What you do is up to you but people is quote from how we see customer
uses PC hardware.

I have the 1TB 990 Evo in a ugreen RTL9210 enclosure too. Works wonder.

Hmm.. based on own experience. I have been using the below enclosure for work.
m.2 used are Gen4 Firecuda 530 and WD SN850X.
no issue whatsoever on Mac, Desktop or even laptop.
