Hup Leong is only at Chinatown. And they provide delivery service. Serious. A HWZoner I rode with bought his Jamis TrailRanger and got free delivery. Just be nice and ask :)

You can always go to Chapter2Cycle at AMK or any of the Rodalink branches (Google it) for a look at Polygon road bikes. Chapter2Cycle and LnT now also carry rather value-for-money road bikes by this brand called Avanti. Merida road bikes can also be in your consideration for their value. So yes, Polygon, Merida, and Avanti. :D

for mountain bikes, seriously consider the GT Avalanche. though super cliche, it's the toughest frame and decent components you'd get for the price range. Probably a disc brake change to Shimano Deore will do since you're doing mostly road. Anything above is just... bling. I cannot emphasize this enough. Anything above the Deore LX series is more than enough for most riders I know, including myself. It's just to boost egos to overcompensate for our lack of skills that we don't acknowledge enough of.

Get a GT Avalanche and switch to slicks if you must, cos if my younger brother can ride a sh*t steel mtb with brandless parts and v-brakes and still keep up with his friend along Lornie Road on a road bike going at 30km/h, so can anyone else.

First and foremost: Be a better rider, outride your bike, then earn the right to know what you need.

Above all, ride safe. :)

only at chinatown.... hahahaha. its only cuz maybe u stay near there?
Deore LX.. lets see you get one right now. if you are able to, i wan one too!

my LBS th, is only 15min away :)

just to make it clear, i stay at AMK, and i ride to Hup Leong at least 3 times a month. why? because i can. also Singapore is too tiny for ANYONE to kbkp about distance. phuck, i ride to west coast and back for the fun of it on rides with my group, and it takes less time for me to complete the ride than for you to put on your makeup and replace your tampon

if you're gonna be such a whiner and a pisspot about stuff and whatnot and you wanna deny other people from decent advice that i'm trying to provide, simply because of YOUR own personal reasons that are ridiculous to say the least (read: your "lbs too far, thus bike = not cool" logic), please, do us all a favour and get another hobby like mahjong instead.

oh, and my LBS is only 5 mins away. :)

hey you all... ive decided to get a mtb and will prolly change to slicks. anyway i was riding giant boulder today and it seem pretty good.

in terms of comparison of specs, is gt the better one out of jamis and giant?
cos for me, i guess the weight do matter but of course, if the specs is much better i will go for specs instead of weight.

what is the difference between a GT Ava 2.0 Disc, 3.0 and 3.0 Disc? GT bikes weigh around 14 kg if im not wrong? Im only looking at Jamis cos i think the appearance is pretty cool but i havent look at their specs yet.

does hup leong sells GT? I understand that they sell jamis (if i didnt remember wrongly!). Im staying at jurong so would prefer to go somewhere nearer to get my bike. :)

cheers! :)

good stuffs are worth the extra mile travelled.

i stay in jurong east but i got my brakes from LnT at tampines and i do visit hup leong(chinatown), GHC(bugis) at times.

if u find riding to the lbs a chore, be like me then, take a bus/mrt, drive or poison a fren and get him to drive there so u can hitch a ride, whichever way possible. go to a reliable lbs and get ur bike, dun go whining when the bike u get from a shady shop play punk on u. :look:

for a peaceful mind, i dun mind travelling across the island to get my stuffs, maybe its just me, i dunno abt some of u guys. :look:

yeah i intend to head down to Hup Leong to check out the jamis X-Trail and LnT as well, esp since ive read so many positive comments about them :)
the most if i cant poison anybody i shall ask for delivery if i get it from LnT. lol. :s13:

so anyway ive decided to zoom down into Jamis X-Trail and GT Ava 2.O.

if i should purchase one of this two,

1) disc brake will be better than V brake?
2) both types can also change to slick/semi-slick?

Gt is a better option rather than Jamis right?

imo i feel tat GT ava shud be pitted against the jamis durango. x-trail is more like along the aggressor line.

1) disc brake offers greater stopping power and modulation then vee brakes, however disc brake comes with a weight disadvantage. but if u aint very concern abt weight, it shud not bother u much at all.

2) i suppose the stock wheelset are able to take in semi slicks, u shud not encounter any problem. check with the lbs to confirm on this.

having ridden both GT ava and Jamis durango, i feel tat both bikes are made in a very strong way, feels very thrashable. as if u can ride like a drunken man, hucking along the way and the frame will take it all in stride. when i examine both frames i see oversized top tubes and downtubes. i hit them with my finger, they give a very solid tick tick sound. :D there said, i am not very sure abt the x-trail, i have seen it before but have not ridden it before.

both brands are good, shud not go wrong with them. componentry wise they are also quite on par.

all these are just personal opinion though, i am just a noob rider with no skills, dun take my comments too seriously. they are many experts ard here. :o

I would prefer to stick to 2 or 3 bike shops which I am comfortable with. If u show the bike shop enuff support, discounts will automatically come without the need for bargaining.

Giant and Specialized are brought in by Tay Cycle/Tay Junction. :o

Not sure about Cannondale.

Thank you for the reply. Will pay Tay a visit to check them out. Hope they have discount for 2008 models.:D

Welcome! Definitely have one.. if you intend to get a Giant Anthem, I'd suggest getting the 2009 model (2010 range should be out already) as it has longer travel than the '08 and also lighter. ;)
