same here.. i'm looking for a bicycle for commuting and cycling purposes (>10km i think) ard that budget range too (though i dun mind spending a bit more if its worth it). I'm a noob when it comes to selecting a bicycle and I had asked this before some time back. I got some feedbacks and did some research.

Currently I'm considering between buying a commuter bike (Jamis commuter 1) or a hardtail bike (Polygon cozmic cx 1.0) and change to slick tire (i suppose this is hybrid?). from what i understand, the suspension makes ur riding on the road less efficient (correct me if i'm wrong) but if the front fork can be locked then does that mean there's no difference? Can advise me which type/one (or any other models) should i get?

yup, but my concern is on jamis website Commuter 1's specification says it only a 3 speed gear hub and I wonder if it would be sufficient for me to overcome some of the steep slopes. Commuter 2 has 7 speed but cost much more and I'm wondering whether it would make riding on the steep slopes any easier (dunno how to see the gear ratio etc.) On the other hand, althought cozmic 1.0 cost more (i think), I had tried the shifting of the gear and I quite like it (I had yet to try riding in Commuter 1 yet), and I think if I lock the front suspension then I think it would be as gd as buying a city/commuter bike? (the reason why some ppl advise not to buy mtr bike if I'm not using it off track?); and also is it worth it to spend 100+ more(I think) on cozmic 1.0 for my purposes (the component etc)

Jamis are hard to find locally. You may want to go Chinatown area, there is one shop that sells Jamis but i have not seen Commuter there b4.

That shop sells Jamis X-Trail, an entry level mtb which may fit ur budget.

The shop in Chinatown should be Hup Leong, they are the local distributor for Jamis.
Last time SCH in Tampines also sells Jamis. Have not been there for over a year, so not sure if they still carry it now.

this is easily the most beautiful stock bike at its price...i seen the real piece its nice..but matt white abit hard to maintain...dun compare parts la at that price....trek and swee..grab!

lol. many others are biased towards a GT or other brands. for that amt of money, some advise to go for a GT ava

i am not sure about u...but seriously i wont be expecting too much from parts of any sub 1k bikes...i can live with that if i spend that amount of money

as a rule of thumb i always follow, buy a frame which you like, and change component slowly... or start off with a GT ava, do some minor upgrades (brakes,pedals,crankset, etc) and start saving for a proper bike when you feel that you wanna get serious. good luck in finding your perfect bike!

i ride a Giant carbon MTB in woodlands

regarding buying a cost (value for money) bike:
GT, Giant, Jamis, Polygon, Raleigh, HASA, Wheeler

have bike setups that are value for money.
afterall these frames are worth the money but parts wise still need changing.
I have seen Polygon bikes with good setups a price wise around $500.
comes with deore parts

unless you are a weight weenie like me.
