I never keep important stuff in any of my machines, I spread them as copies over my HDDs, including my OS discs and installation files.

This enables me to rebuild my system within a mere hour or two. Especially for Mac.

Windows I can rebuild in 45 minutes.

Time Machine is not ideal for me because I'm not always plugged in to the network via UTP, and Wireless-N isn't that fast at home either. I was very on about Time Machine, but it didn't catch on to me.

The idea of containing delta changes was there, but it's too slow for me. If my system crashes, I prefer a quick format and get it up into bare running statuses that can let me do work.

Playing with restoration takes time for both Mac/PC.

As for 5D MKIII, faster BUY BUY BUY!!!!

Oh... My time machine backup to a portable hdd... Time machine to Network storage very very slow...

I am trying to consolidate all my memories into 1 hdd. Always have photos all over the place...

Still waiting for 1 quote... Hee...

Just get 1 Hdd and dump all photos inside. Sort by date and event. Then it'll be much neater. Use a photo management app so that you won't need to go and see the files and folders

use a, b, c, d... at the end of file name for different version? Work for me :D
I normally sort the images into genre, then by YYYMMDD - <short description> and dump all the NEF files in. For weddings I keep the JPEG and Resized-JPEGS in the same folder. That way, I never lose any of my files :D and it's easier to find where my files will go to.

I went through network cos I don't want to carry too many portable, I have 3 now, very tiring, always guessing where the files will be, leh chey.

NAS allows me to access my files 24/7, the external 3TB is a pure backup of the NAS so it doesn't need to be on 24/7.

I sort by genre, date. One time clean up, last time never label the folder, don't know the contents, now I smarter liao.

I mass rename the filenames also to a acroynm of the folder description and create sorted numbering.

Nothing pro... =( must learn from you all... =)

Okay... Good idea... Will try to get all photos into 1 hdd then I try to rename...

I usually use photomechanic to import and sieve my photos. Then I'll export the shortlisted pictures to light room for further editing. Final jpegs are stored in the same sub folder
