A blast from the past with Fred Perry

Fashion in the UK throughout the 50s until the 70s were a delightful mix of punk, subcultures, grunge and an importance on reinvention. This resulted in lasting fashion trends that still hold their weight even until today.

Being the first successful crossover brand from sportswear to street wear, Fred Perry’s Laurel Wreath has become one of the more recognizable logos in fashion. It’s preppy style has garnered many fans in Singapore as well.

Fans of the 59-year-old brand will be able to take a peak into their archives as they reissue four classic shirts, said to represent four movements through the 50s, 60s and 70s. Paying great attention to the details as they always have, nothing was overlooked from the weight of the pique to the style of the buttons.

The first reissue, the 1957 Fred Perry shirt, was born when street wear fans approached the brand to modify their tennis wear for them.

Tippings were added to the collars and sleeves and it was a sure hit, marking their successful crossover. Available in maroon with white tipping and ice with navy tipping, it features a lighter weight pique and a shorter placket.

The 1963 Northern Soul Shirt is a tribute to the music and dance movement that emerged from the British mod scene in the 60s. Strong elements of the classic mod style are included, the sew-on patches on this re-issue shirt are reminiscent of those worn by members of the movement.

Punk is a huge fashion trend that British rock and roll generated. Fred Perry beings us back to those times with the 1976 Punk Shirt featuring a paint splatter design. Aptly, this shirt is available in black with champagne tipping, the choice colours of the punk scene back then.

The Perry Boys, a underground fashion subculture that spawned the wedge haircut and the rave scenes that followed, are remembered by this 1979 Perry Boy Shirt. In a more classical style and a finer, flatter pique, this shirt is available in red with a navy tipping.

Prices for the Fred Perry Re-issue polo shirts range from $179 to $199 and is available at all Fred Perry boutiques islandwide from mid-July.

Not sure if this is being pitched as a piece of art or as a wearable piece of everyday clothing. Whatever way you look at it, the Fred Perry x Sir Peter Blake Blank Canvas polo shirts are now available in limited numbers.

The iconic British pop artist has teamed up with Fred Perry for three shirt styles that have been made and printed in England in a numbered run of 1000. The styles feature rainbow and union jack patches alongside screen printed icons such as stars, hearts and targets. Peter Blake’s signature sign-off sits on each hem and back neck label. There's also some Peter Blake packaging for each one.

A collector's release with a collector's price at £125. Perhaps something to pick up and store way for a rainy day. See the other designs over the page
