Besides the exorbitant price, I can't quite wrap my head around the negativity towards the announcement. Buying a new console every 3 to 4 years is fine for those who wants it. I'm not sure why some are triggered (not here but comments on YouTube, Reddit etc.), it's not as though consoles are following the route of mobile phones with new releases every year.
Game consoles are purely optional, nobody are forced or held at gunpoint to buy it. If anyone feel it's a waste of money, doesn't like the idea of a mid-gen upgrade, don't care about more powerful hardware or don't see the value in upgrading, simply don't buy it. Games will continue to release on base PS5 & are perfectly playable, so there's no worry of anyone missing out or get left behind.
Pro is just another option for those willing to pay a premium price for more power & better performance. There's no need to choose between Fidelity or Performance Mode in supported games, as there'll be a Pro-exclusive graphics mode using PSSR upscaler.
As more demanding games start to release in the latter half of this gen lifecycle such as GTA VI, The Last of Us 3, Ghost of Tsushima 2 etc. Pro will be the best console on the market to play these titles.
People spend $2k on new mobile phones every year or two with marginal upgrades without any issue. But we get brand new tech in the ps5 pro for $700 usd and suddenly there's an uproar.
Negativity drives clicks. And unfortunately, many people I know got caught up in the negativity and said they'll swear off playstation, saying that they'll just go pc next gen and don't mind waiting 2-3 years for the PlayStation exclusives to hit the PC.
Besides the outrage regarding the price tag, Tom Warren from The Verge is now spreading a new rumour that the Ps5 Pro runs games at 30 fps which is a totally ridiculous and baseless rumour.
If you actually watched the video, Mark Cerny stated that 75% of people play on performance mode instead of fidelity mode. The purpose of the pro is to enable players to play fidelity mode with all the bells and whistles, and yet retain a smooth 60 fps. But yet here we are with a new rumour that the pro runs games at 30 fps and Digital Foundry also added fuel to the fire by saying that Grand Theft Auto 6 will be only 30 fps on the pro.
Even folks from IGN, especially Ryan McCaffrey and Destin Legarie spread rumours last week that Sony money hatted Black Myth Wukong for exclusivity. Digital Foundry also sided with them and guess what? Digital Foundry (EuroGamer) is owned by IGN.
Those saying Oh $700 can buy a pc that matches the ps5 pro, don't know anything about the tech inside it. Namely the PSSR and the new Ray Tracing tech/RDNA 4.
Don't forget the $700 usd includes a DualSense. So if people wanna build a $700 pc. They gotta factor in the cost of a DualSense, WiFi 7 chip and a 2tb ssd.
Take that $700 usd. Minus away the cost of a DualSense, minus away the chip for the WiFi 7 and a 2tb ssd, and I want to see how you're going to build a pc that matches the new technology and capabilities of a ps5 pro.
And with regards to the cpu in the ps5 pro, do you really think Mark Cerny is just going to put in the 4 year old cpu from the regular ps5 into the ps5 pro without any enhancements?
Negativity and rage baiting is very effective. But stop and think for a moment.
PS5 Pro uses the AMD Shift technology so it can shift power from GPU to CPU and vice versa, if needed. Not to mention the powerful decompressor HW units that PS5 has which frees up the CPU. In short, the gpu in the pro is able to shoulder the burden of the CPU.
It's frightening that tech enthusiasts, instead of being excited about new tech and seeing how our gaming experience can be enhanced with new technology, resort to click-baity articles and videos about the price all in the name of console warring and spreading fear, uncertainty and doubt (surely a specialty of Microsoft).
Now it's all about how a $700 pc can beat the snot out of the Ps5 pro.
Funny you don't see people and tech sites whine about the price tag whenever a new iteration of a phone gets announced.
They talk about the new tech in it. The possibilities. But for some reason, playstation always gets these click baity negative news.
If anyone remembers, just before the launch of current gen consoles, tech sites/channels like The Verge (Tom Warren) , Windows Central (Jez Corden) and even Digital Foundry etc were saying that even the Xbox Series S would run circles around the ps5 and that the ps5 is only RDNA 1 while the series S and X are true RDNA 2, and yet it is the Series S that's holding back and causing issues for game development (see Baldur's Gate 3/Wukong etc for example) and there are numerous games where the ps5 outperforms the series X.
What this tiktok generation of people need is the ability to do critical thinking.
