Totally agreed with you on that. No one can know. No one will also know if the market would crash at the end of your 10 year timeframe.

But I feel we’ve gotta at least try. The market is beaten down right now. And to outperform 2.5%. Is it really that hard? Is it really too much of a risk?

Agree its a reasonable risk to take. It is just that 2 years is obviously shorter than 10 and if you need the money definitely by then, you have to ask yourself what would you do IF this investment is still under water? Is there a plan B?

Never listen blindly ... he may be knowledgeable about certain stuff but at the end of your day, you are fully responsible for your own investing

And pls don’t insult my friends knowledge...what a sweeping statement

To be fair, BBCWatcher is probably more knowledgeable about investing than my circle of friends. And my circle of friends include quite a no of Chartered Accountants, many of whom had never heard abt Boglehead or IWDA.

Their idea of investing is buy DBS at $15 or STI at 2k. If not, keep in bank. After a while, I give up talking abt investing with them liao.

Not to mention the myriad of self proclaim investors especially in residential real estate but can’t get simple financial ratios correct or NPV etc, neither can they even fully understand IRR or adjusted IRR and even as simple as yield while making big personal capital budgeting decisions. And they wanna tell u what to do !

Im only willing to listen to those be it what they are who have actually succeeded ..a large part I want to know are strategies they use to manage their emotions in their journey towards wealth accumulation especially via asset allocation through stocks and shares.

Too bad I know none. Do u ? Learn their secrets.

lol I concur on the part ... buy DBS at this or that or should I buy Citibank now ? all technical analysis they use with zero fundamentals. When make money, the louder the siren, then becomes a lot quieter ...we know what happened.

Accountants are often the worst to discuss wealth accum as they manage the company’s numbers but does nothing to their own.

Yes, better to listen to someone with an actual track record and actually managing a healthy-sized portfolio. For example, there are bloggers and forummers that do post what they are buying and selling. Then you can judge not only their advice but how they apply their advice to their own investments.

Learning from others how they apply their strategy is often more important that reading some cut and paste investment strategy. So I am skeptical about those that never provide details of how they apply their strategy to their own investments/portfolio. (is it because they are student/fresh grad and have no portfolio to speak of cause they are repaying housing/student debt?)

On the internet, student/fresh grad with some 'book knowledge' can pretend to be expert investor. You can tell the students from the practical investors because the students usually think there is only one right answer which their professor told them, but practical investors know that the world is more complex than that.

Latest top 10 holdings in iwda. Technology forms 16%. Are the top 10 holdings also the top 10 biggest companies in the world? How does iwda weigh its holdings?

What happen if your W-8BEN expires? Does it affect anything if you forget to renew?
A W-8BEN filing doesn't really expire, except if the facts reported on the form change. When any material facts change, you should file a new, also truthful W-8BEN (or W-9 if the new fact is you become a U.S. person).

Typically your broker will ask for a new W-8BEN filing every 3 years. Certain bad things are hypothetically possible if you fail to respond to your broker's request, or if the broker has reason to doubt the veracity of your filing. Your broker would likely be within its rights to: (1) liquidate your assets and close your account, and/or (2) assume the worst from a tax withholding point of view, that you are a tax delinquent U.S. person, and increase the amount of money withheld -- and send that money to the IRS. These outcomes are not particularly likely, but they're hypothetically possible.

In short, unless and until the facts change to require a new filing, don't worry about "expiration." Just respond to your broker's requests when/if they're made.

haha, obviously, you failed in life.

i am so sorry that u got smashed by my networth and to rub salt into you, i started from nothing.

anyway, so that the general readers are not mislead.

i have already said investing in STI are for... losers.

Don't need to jjww and think ur the only one who made alot of money
many of us here have made lots of money but unlike u, we don't let it corrupt us by breeding arrogance
obviously its the first time u have so much money that u can't handle the emotions that come with it, understandable, been there, done that

since bbc advised to invest in STI, is he a loser?

tbh, if that's what u think, we are on the same side???

The only result worth showing are for all to see daily on a blog.

For eg. My equity component beats the pure iwda or Vwra or Vusd hollow at the moment.

Does not mean my AA is best. On pure return basis, rarely any AA beats the market over time . Even some bloggers lose to the humble STI.

But on an overall return tailored to your acceptable risk tolerance, as long it works for u, that’s the best AA.

Although bonds meaningfully reduce overall risks. But the fact especially I seem to just look at the equity only.
Hence I realise there is an issue with my emotional well being. That what I actually need r likely more defensive stocks as I increase my equity component over time to 100.

I think Long ago I read about someone who just has 100 percent equity. But it’s an equity that is all defensive aka consumer staples mainly, utilities etc ..mainly dividends... with this he sticks to it for many years now old and rich. Unlikely to beat the market but if he were to take a global approach, he would always wonder whether TECH or Financials make sense and if he did, he likely be incorporating bonds hence 60/40 or so. Would that 60/40 beat his 100 percent equity defensive over 20 years? Unlikely...

I'm executing right now but results are still pending so don't dare to share :s13:

Then there must be tons of these "losers" on this thread since Shiny Things is a strong advocate of investing heavily in home market (regardless of size of home market relative to VTI). :s22:

Thanks for the reply. I saw got W-8BEN expiry date on the trading platform I used. So was wondering.

I did?

I’ll repeat (for the umpteenth time) exactly what my views have been and still are with respect to the STI stocks, i.e. funds ES3 and G3B (and technically U.S. listed fund EWS, although that’s a weird one). For those planning to retire in Singapore (who have a right of retirement abode in Singapore, obviously), in my view it’s OK to have up to 20% of your portfolio invested in the STI stocks. “Up to 20%” does not mean “must be 20%” or even “must be.” 0% is also within the range I suggest. It’s up to you, of course. I’m just describing the range I’m comfortable with.

You can easily find my past comments about the STI stocks. I’ve explained my views on this subject in great detail. You’re also perfectly free to ignore my suggestions.

I don’t think people who invest in the STI funds are “losers.” They might be winners for all we know! The future isn’t written yet.
