Found a laptop of mine, was able to reformat in win xp but unable to access internet despite wireless/Lan connected successfully (I guess win xp is no longer supported). Any suggestions on what else can I use it for or otherwise, where can I discard it safely?

Specs:
Acer Aspire 5500Z
Intel Pentium M Processor 740
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900
80G HDD
512MB DDR2

Yes, managed to install the drivers including the intel chipset and ethernet controller. Only the VGA and audio driver cannot be installed.

You can try Windows 7 instead. I got it working on a first gen netbook so your laptop should have no problem running it.

Just throw away liao.
Even Linux Mint also cannot support this.

Pentium M with 512MB RAM? Just throw Linux on it, and use a very light distro. It might not be powerful enough to run ChromeOS (which is based on Linux) so antiX comes to mind. But even so it'll struggle a bit with <1GB of RAM. I'd advise bumping to least 1-2GB if you can find memory upgrades so you can run Lubuntu or something a bit more involved.

Windows would probably be a little too demanding on it imo.

Check if your RC ZONE has recycle bin for electronics items.
