Olympus E-PL6 vs Canon 700D?

Hi all, I am currently torn between these 2 models for an entry level DSLR/Mirrorless system.

I have not seen any pic quality comparison of these 2, so I would like to ask, "On a budget of 700 - 1100, is a Mirrorless really on par in picture-quality with a Canon/Nikon DSLR?"

Cant say for olympus, but for Sony NEX, yes on par, sensor size is same or almost the same(APS-C)

Depends whether or not do you shoot high ISO and pixel peep?
If no...then there isn't a massive gap in difference.

I am not gonna shoot high ISO, and I dunno what "pixel peep" means.

But if there's even a 5 - 10% difference in standard photos, then yeah it matters alot to me.

Pixel Peeper - A digital photographer who magnifies photographs on the computer screen to critically evaluate image resolution at the pixel level.

Based on your reply, you might be someone who cares a lot about IQ.
You can used the Studio Comparison Tool at Dpreview to make an informed decision on which camera to go for.

from what i know:
if u love shoot fast/ moderate moving object, dslr is the only answer.
if u love shoot static/ slow moving object, both can do the job.
if u love shoot in raw n edit it with pc, dslr is the only answer.
if u love shoot jpeg, both can do the job

If you dont mind the bulkiness of DSLR.. then i suggest DSLR over Olympus mirrorless..
Have a look at Sony NEX and Fujifilm X series.. These also have bigger sensor than 4/3.
But if you go for smaller and lighter cam.. then mirrorless olympus/panasonic is the answer.

Anyhow, new DSLR such as Canon 100D and Sony A3000 are also smaller than usual DSLR body

Theoritically APS-C sensor is better than 4/3 sensor in term of IQ..

from my POV, since your are starting out, go for high end mirrorless.

like you, last year i bought my first DSLR, the 650D. i subsequently got a fast zoom and the weight was crazy..

i changed to omd em-5 with the same focal length. the pictures i shoot now are on par, additionally i find the focus speed and the accuracy better on the omd. did i mention i love the weight? i shoot a lot more with it now than my DSLR and i shoot in jpeg+raw.. edited in lightroom.

if you are are getting the 700D, i'd recommend you to get the OMD second hand. there is a "fire sale" on clubsnap now as people are upgrading to the latest and greatest EM1

Okay. Now I have a good idea of what I want at a budget of 1 - 1.5k including accessories and dry cabinet. (no need tripod)

My top 3 priorities are

Picture Quality
Touchscreen (don't laugh, I am too used to smartphone)
Viewfinder Accuracy/Coverage (Some of the shots I took with 600D turned out very slightly different in position)

and additional 3

Affordability of additional lenses (I would like to have 3 sets of lens for four purposes. All-rounder, close-up of objects and products, portraits, zoom).
Functionality - Ideally it should be able to serve all my needs. Be it taking animals in the zoo, my cousin's wedding, my anime figurines up-close, nature, Halloween at USS at night etc...I do not expect pro quality pictures to be blown up to poster-size, or to sell my shots, but I expect to be able to proudly show them to friends and family.
Latest model - I would not be upgrading my camera for at least 5 years. Ideally I want a new model just so I don't feel like like I am using an outdated product (even if its still a good camera).

Size and weight is a bonus, but not absolutely necessary. Stuff like Megapixels, ISO, Video-taking is of no consideration. I will do my post-processing with Photoshop and Acdsee so fun modes like BnW, Toy Camera etc not important either.

head over to DPreview....look at how they stack up against DSLRS...

ultimately is what feels good to you and what you will use the most.

for me, my current setup is lighter and takes better pictures

I saw it, and its seriously damn solid. Can't decide between this and Sony Nex-7.

NX300 has no viewfinder...

Nex-7 has no touchscreen...

Tmd, I think I need to go one of the better camera shops around and ask, "Show me a Mirrorless with Viewfinder, Touchscreen and CMO-S"

No touchscreen and NFC

NX300 no viewfinder... But you want the viewfinder cos save battery? Buy a few more batteries la. Hippo pack batteries quite cheap

Besides battery-saving, I really enjoy the feel of using a viewfinder to take photos, rather than always relying on LCD.

then honestly get teh GX7 with 20mm kit. great sharp lens and wonderful sensor processing.

sorry i believe the top tier mirrorless outdo the entry - mid level dslrs. on top of that olympus\panasonic mirrorless are the way to go unless u like sony.....

I am currently using the EOS 60D. I also gotten the EPL6 about 2 weeks back as I wanted a lighter system to bring around with me especially for trips and baby snapping.

Having tried the MFT system for the last 2 weeks with the kit 14-42 lens, ( also bought the 45mm F1.8 ), these are my findings.

+Plus :

1. Autofocus is extremely fast! Especially when using the 45mm prime lens. I compared with my 60D on the 50mm F1.8 EF and notice the Oly is much faster. I know its not really an accurate comparison but this is the closest I can get.

Since its contract detection, it can detect face and its extremely easy and accurate to snap babies.

2. AWB is good. In fact, I have read reviews about Oly’s highly accurate AWB and I too, found this to be true.

3. Picture quality is on par with my 60D. Despite MFT's smaller sensor, its on par with APSC. The Oly can also shoot in RAW or RAW + Jpeg.

4. Noise. I couldn’t notice much difference between the Oly and 60D even at higher ISOs ( 3200 or 6400 )


5. Of coz, its a lighter system altogether. And I find myself bringing it everywhere I go and leaving my 60D at home. They say that the best camera is the one always with you. How true.


-Minus:

1. DOF is deeper on the MFT. APSC can give a shallower DOP. So if you are constantly looking for the bokeh effect, then APSC would be a better option. For MFT lens, the widest aperture is only F1.8 on the M Zuiko lens ( Oly ) and F1.7 on the Pana. There is the F0.95 Voigtlander however there is no AF on this lens. I think its a contrary to the MFT's fast AF.

2. DSLR are always better for sports / fast action.

3. A DSLR has dedicated buttons for fast options. I still like my 60D’s top LCD panel for all the quick info as well as instant access to some of the common selections like ISO and AF.
Further more, the Oly does not have a dial button. Even for entry DSLRs like the 600D, they already have a dial. Fortunately, the Oly’s buttons are highly customisable and every button can be customised. The directional pad has a rotatary dial and even the direction can be customised.

Of coz before I gotten the Oly EPL6, I do considered the Oly EP5. However price is slightly on the high side. For a few hundreds more, I could have gotten the upcoming OMD-EM1.
