Onboard audio vs. USB speakers

My new board, Asus Strix B660-i Gaming WiFi has onboard audit that I heard is quite good:

"SupremeFX S1220A codec with Savitech SV3H712 amplifier, along with Two-Way AI Noise Cancelation, DTS® Sound Unbound™ and Sonic Studio III"

I've downsized my studio monitors to reduce clutter and no use the modest Creative Pebble v3 speakers on my PC, which has USB-C input.

Using USB-C, it bypasses the onboard audit - is there a significant difference in quality? (and I know the Pebbles aren't exactly audiophile speakers to begin with!)

Low End Speaker No Difference.
If you really want go use software equalizer DIY the sound signature.

When you connect active speakers to devices using digital input such as USB-C, the speakers will receive digital input and use the DAC in the speakers to convert the signal to analog. This is probably what the manufacturer intended the speakers to sound out of the box.

If you want to use the features on your sound card, then you have to connect to it.

By right the build in USB should sound better than 3.5mm with Custom tuning by the Manufacturer.
Unless their tuning or speaker really cmi.

I feel the difference is not going to be significant unless you are very particular about sound quality. Then the Creative Pebble as you rightfully pointed out will be the first bottleneck.

Thanks all for the replies. Asking out of curiousity but I agree, the Pebble's probably won't make a difference although after going through a gamut of studio monitors, I've come to really like them for the simplicity, size and decent audio quality

Nowadays people more on TWS Wireless Earbuds liao.

I have a pair of Jabra 85T's, like them when I go out/exercising etc. but when I'm sitting at the PC at home I prefer speakers. BUt it's certainly an option (didn't really occur to me) as the mobo has bluetooth support

Yup.
Decent Earbuds will always beat cheap speakers.

Personally, I don't quite like the audio quality of the Jabra earbuds. I am using the Elite85, but compared to the much cheaper UGreen HiTune X6, the UGreen earbuds sounded a lot better with punchier bass (not those eardrum bashing bass) without ANC on. Overall, the Elite85 sounds flatter when compaerd to the HiTune X6 in my subjective testing. With ANC on, both earbuds exhibit an expected drop in audio quality, with the cheaper HiTune X6 performing worst as the audio feels somewhat muddier.

Like yourself, I prefer using the speakers at home. I feel the sound quality is better via cables and without the latency from Bluetooth headsets as well. Anyway, I wasn't able to get the Jabra to connect to the Intel Bluetooth. Happened to my previous 2 Sennheiser headphones as well where the Intel Bluetooth simply will not detect them even after multiple attempts to pair them.

Use KZ Z09 Pro and change the Pin C Earbuds as I deem fit

From my experience, intel BT is always glitchy regardless of your device. Last time every day a headache when want to connect my controller and tried many intel BT adapters and internal cards, but it's all the same.

After I switched to ORICO BTA-508/608 adapter, which uses Realtek BT and a proprietary driver, never had issues since.

If you are new to ASUS ROG motherboard, mine is also using similar onboard audio SupremeFX S1220A but the newer board have a newer AMP/DAC.
I am using Logitech Z407 which have USB, TBH the ASUS onboard will sound better.

USB wise maybe good but to me it is missing the sound stage and surround unlike when connected to onboard.
That Creative v3 speaker I have no comment since I don't own one so I can't comment.

Thanks for the feedback. It's fine as I guess I'm quite happy with the Pebbles for now since I don't do much music listening on my PC now that I've got my living room setup done up (which is next to my PC). In the past I used studio monitors for PC as I listened to music quite a fair bit but now it's only for gaming and youtube etc. which the USB and onboard are fine.

Unless I get the itch to try a soundbar for the PC that kicks ass, I won't go back to the footprint/bulk of the monitors on my desk again

Nah, I don't like clutter which is why I always went with larger monitors as I didn't want the subwoofer from the 2.1 on the floor. If there's a decent soundbar with decent bass without a subwoofer unit, I may consider

Lol I just sold those. Sound was not impressive coming from JBL LSR305’s then before that was using the Presonus EriS 4.5 and Mackie CR4s. All of which were excellent except for the ilouds. Was very disappointed after all the reviews I read
