The OnePlus Open 2 aka OPPO Find N5 are some of the most anticipated foldable smartphones at the moment, and their changes have just been detailed. To be clear, the OPPO Find N5 changes were detailed by a well-known tipster, but that device is expected to become the OnePlus Open 2 globally.

The OnePlus Open 2 changes have been detailed by a well-known tipster

The information comes from Digital Chat Station, who is almost never wrong when it comes to such info. Based on what he said, the devices will be thinner, lighter, and more powerful. He did share some specifics as well.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite was mentioned once again. It was mentioned several times thus far in correlation with these two smartphones. The source also said that wireless charging will be supported this time around, which is great to hear.

IPX8 water resistance was also mentioned, as was a 50-megapixel periscope telephoto camera. He also mentioned the “anti-fall body structure”, and the fact the phones will offer longer battery life this time around.

Previously he mentioned a 5,700mAh battery. That would be a huge improvement over a 4,805mAh battery inside the OPPO Find N3 and OnePlus Open. Some sources even suggested a battery around 6,000mAh, though.

These two smartphones are expected to arrive in Q1 2025

The OPPO Find N5 is tipped to arrive in the first quarter of next year, and the OnePlus Open 2 should drop around that time too. Neither company confirmed anything just yet, however.

As a reminder, the OPPO Find N3 and OnePlus Open arrived back in October last year. So OPPO and OnePlus are already behind, kind of, so let’s hope that the Q1 2025 rumor is spot on.

Don’t get me wrong, those two smartphones are still outstanding, but based on what we’re hearing about their successors, there’s plenty to look forward to.

OnePlus achieved considerable success with the OnePlus Open, its inaugural foray into the foldable smartphone market. Launched in 2023, the Open quickly garnered a loyal following, leaving fans eager for its successor. Amidst a flurry of rumors surrounding the OnePlus Open 2, we’re bringing you an exclusive first look, in collaboration with industry insiders Yogesh Brar & Chunvn.

Based on a late-stage prototype, these renders offer valuable insights into the upcoming foldable. OnePlus appears to be going for a design refresh, with the Open 2 becoming larger yet thinner than its predecessor. The bold circular camera module remains, housing a triple-lens system proudly bearing the Hasselblad branding.

When folded, the OnePlus Open 2 is said to measure just under 10mm thin, potentially ranking it among the slimmest foldable phones available. Furthermore, it boasts an IPX8 rating, a significant upgrade from the original OnePlus Open’s IPX4 rating.

OnePlus Open 2 Specifications (Expected)

The OnePlus Open 2 is rumored to feature an 8-inch, 120Hz, 2K LTPO main display complemented by a 6.4-inch AMOLED cover screen. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite SoC will power the device, coupled with up to 16GB of RAM and a generous 1TB of storage. The camera system is expected to include a 50MP main sensor, a 50MP ultrawide lens, and a 50MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom. For selfies, a dual camera setup with 32MP and 20MP sensors is anticipated.

Battery capacity is poised to increase to 5,900mAh, a notable jump from the 4,800mAh battery in the OnePlus Open. Wired charging speeds will reportedly reach 80W, while wireless charging is expected to see a boost to 50W (the Open did not have wireless charging). The phone will ship with Android 15 and OxygenOS 15 out of the box.

OnePlus Open 2 Expected Launch Date

The OnePlus Open 2 is projected to launch in China early next year, followed by a global release in late Q1 2025. It’s worth noting that the OnePlus Open 2 is likely to be a rebranded version of the OPPO Find N5, with both smartphones slated for a global launch around the same time. At launch, the OnePlus Open 2 will probably be available in two memory/storage configurations and two color options, including a standard black variant.

Since these images are from one other final stage prototype, so there might be subject to some design tweaks.

One place where foldables have often lacked is when it comes to water and dust resistance. While no one has figured out a really good solution for dust, Oppo is teasing that the Find N5 and OnePlus Open 2 will have stellar water resistance.

In a video posted to Weibo, Oppo’s Zhou Yibao shows the Find N5 – the hardware the OnePlus Open 2 will be based on – being dunked in water and even used underwater. In a post, Yibao says that the Find N5 will be the “only” foldable with IPX6, IPX8, and IPX9 water resistance ratings.

IPX9 would fit in with the OnePlus 13 and other recent releases from BBK’s brands. IP69 on the OnePlus 13 expands on the existing IP68 rating with support for higher liquid temperatures and stronger jets of water.

Beyond that the video also offers up a fit look at the inner and outer displays. The outer display looks to have thinner bezels in its quick cameo, while the inner display looks very similar to the existing model. The camera is still in the far right corner, and the aspect ratio also looks about the same as the existing Find N3 and OnePlus Open.

In a previous teaser, Yibao showed off the incredibly thin hardware of the Find N5, showing that, when opened, the foldable is just barely thicker than a USB-C port.

Anyone waiting to upgrade to Oneplus Open 2? My Z Fold 4, after 2.5 years, is starting to break apart (bubbles forming below the inside screen).

Hello friends,

I’ve been reading all the exciting discussions and speculations on the OnePlus Open 2 in our forum lately, and I want to take a moment to thank each and everyone of you for your continued enthusiasm and support. As product manager of the OnePlus Open, I feel incredibly proud of what we've built together and how the device has been embraced by so many of you. Your feedback and appreciation mean the world to me, and I’m truly grateful for the journey we’ve shared thus far.

When we launched the original OnePlus Open, it was a revolutionary product—a bold step forward that set an entirely new industry benchmark. It was incredibly well-received in 2023, with pre-sale sellouts, recognition as "Best Foldable of 2023," and praise for its display ratio, ultra-portable design, and TÜV Rheinland’s 1,000,000 fold certification. Building on this success, the OnePlus Open Apex Edition, introduced in 2024, brought innovations like, advanced privacy features, and top-tier RAM and ROM configurations, in a stunning new Crimson Shadow colorway, all designed to meet the evolving needs of foldable device users.

At OnePlus, our core strength and passion lie in setting new benchmarks and challenging the status quo across all product categories. With that in mind, we’ve carefully considered the timing and our next steps in foldable devices, and we have made the decision not to release a foldable this year.

While this may come as a surprise, we believe this is the right approach for us at this time. As OPPO takes the lead in the foldable segment with the Find N5, we're committed to developing products that will redefine multiple categories and bring you experiences that are as innovative and exciting as ever, all while aligning closely with our Never Settle mantra.

That said, our decision to pause on foldable for this generation does not signify a departure from the category. OPPO’s Find N5 demonstrates remarkable advancements in foldable technology, including the use of cutting-edge new materials and more sophisticated engineering. We remain committed to incorporating these breakthroughs into our future products.

This is not a step back, it’s a recalibration. Our commitment to innovation is stronger than ever, and we’re excited to bring you fresh, unique experiences that truly Never Settle.

What Does This Mean for Current OnePlus Open Users?

For all of you who already own the OnePlus Open, nothing changes. You’ll continue to receive regular software updates, security patches, and the exceptional after-sales service you’ve come to expect from us. You are at the heart of everything we do, and we’ll continue to support you every step of the way.

Thank you once again for being part of this incredible journey. Stay tuned for what’s next. We can’t wait to share it with you soon!

Never Settle.
Vale G.
