Hi all, let's say if i would like to backpack around europe but do not have a fixed return date how do I go about getting an open ticket or flexible ticket? One that allows you to edit your return date.

The reason I am asking this is because I know that many places in the world will deny entry if the traveler is to produce a one way ticket.

It just so happens that I've fairly recently returned from a six months trip across Europe, and the manner in which I've solved the return ticket issue was to buy two separate single one-way ticket. My advise for you is to buy yourself a one-way to your first destination, and look into buying another one-way ticket back home when you have decided to end your trip. Travel fatigue will be a good indicator for letting you know if you are moving around too fast and too often, or it could be an indicator that you are ready to return home. Watch out for it. As a reference, I personally chose UK - London as my first stop, and ended my trip six months later in Turkey - Istanbul.

Since you are heading into Europe, I would recommend looking into how the Schengen Zone is arranged (so you wouldn't over stay the 90 days restriction for the entire zone) and which countries uses the Eur currency and which uses their own currency. As a Singaporean citizen, the Schengen Visa is granted electronically upon entry into your first Schengen country, and you will have to do your own record keeping on each entry or exit. You may want to consider lumping the Schengen countries together to avoid confusing entry and exit date counting.

As for being queried at either airport/ferry/road immigration check points for proof of exit, it largely depends on how much time you plan on staying in any particular country. My reply usually depends on whether how far ahead I have planned my travels at any given point during my trip. If I have already purchased bus/ferry/airline tickets, I will provide them upon request. If I do not have any of that, I'll just reply honestly that I am on a sabbatical and wish to travel around the region - and I have not encountered any issues. To be frank, I was only asked this question twice (once in London, and once in Finland).

I hope this helps.
