An open pod sucking in hot air under the bonnet will not do the car any good. Holistically by supplying cooler air from the bumper front and isolating the pod from heat source will be a better choice. Whether is there any 'gains' will be debatable.

Of course CAI. Never run open pod in the engine bay...... You get worse than stock performance. The purpose of CAI is to duct in cool air from outside engine bay. Thats all. You can stick with stock intake cause it already does that.

I prefer open pod CAI because its washable and I rarely have to replace it (I clean it once a year only....).

To me, the advantage of open pod is not about performance, its about easy maintenance and it has better air flow (360 degrees compared to 180 for panel filter). The better air flow means the filter can last longer before it needs to be cleaned.

Open pod DOES NOT IMPROVE PERFORMANCE for bread and butter cars. Of course they do work but not for stock BB NA cars.

You need either very high CC and high revving NA engine that requires tremendous amount of air or turbo charged cars.

Maybe can put it this way. If there isnt any performance 'lost', the induction noise is well worth it...

Does open pod improve FC? Due to better air flow and better combustion?

An open pod can maximize the volumetric air flow into and via the MAF (which is the real bottleneck). Whether you need more air as determined by the car manufacturer when they design the vehicle with that particular engine in mind is an unknown. Unless you are able to try out a few MAFs and conclude the optimum size and volume with dyno charts. More often than not, a slightly larger MAF is only useful above 5000RPM depending on the engine type. How often do you rev your car above 5000RPM to warrant a switch to bigger MAF and intake?

Better combustion comes from the MAF (and oxygen sensor) readings so you get a more accurate AFR if the ECU is competent enough. This could potentially lead to better FC if you have cooler air.

For B&B cars, just drop in a K&N panel filter and be happy with it. Wash and oil every 6 months and it is practically worry/maintenance free.

If you are driving a 'sportier' vehicle, a good ram air intake system to look at is GruppeM. They customised their systems for several high end cars.
