In a dilemma. My 13 year old dog is scheduled for an operation to remove cancer lumps next week. She has also recently showed signs of tooth decay (her teeth chatters every now and then and so i assume it’s gotta be a tooth issue based on previous dog ownerships). On my previous visit, vet felt lumps on my dog and suggested to remove. The cancer cells might be benign or not, not sure until the lumps have been removed and tested.

The vet said that my dog will undergo an examination to check if she is fit for surgery. Understand the removal of the Cancer lumps is for a better quality of life.

My concern here is should i let my dog go for the surgery? Money is no concern here but i am just worried about her age. What if she does not wake up again? Right now, she seems healthy for a 13 year old, always looking forward to her daily walks and gets all jumpy about it. She walks real slow though due to her weak legs. She is a singapore special so she probably can live up to 15 years old according to google.

Vet did mention that if its not benign, then my dog has a good shot at having a prolonged life. But if the lumps were benign, then the operation would have been a waste of my dog’s suffering right? Even if it is cancerous, there is nothing much the vet can do if it has spread to other parts of the body. So it’s like me paying for my dog to suffer without much guarantee that the cancer removal will be a complete success.

Anyone can advise what would u do if it were your dog? Would u just let your dog live the rest of its life and leave the rest to god or take the plunge and go for the surgery? I was thinking if i don’t know if the cells were not benign would be better than to know they are cancerous and i can’t do anything about it yet put my dog through a surgery at this age. Any advise please? Thanks in advance.

I would do the operation. Is there much suffering for this sort of operation? If the lumps are on the surface of the body (since the vet can feel them) then it is not really that invasive. So, not really going to suffer.

If the lumps are benign, then, peace of mind is great. If lumps are malignant, removal => perhaps saving the dog's life but definitely prolonging it. There really is no downside from doing the operation.

Re

If you treat the dog as part of your family then treat it like a member of your family. Do what you would do if any human family member has the problem

If operation can help then help. If cannot then bo pian. I believe you would apply the same to your human family memebr if he/she suffers the same problem too, right? Remember, when you start to have a pet you take the responsibility to see until it ends just like your human family members. Otherwise don't have a pet in the first place.

Hope your dog recovers whether from operation or not
