just saw the brochure for Lenovo laptop Ideapad 330s $1199 only

then it says has some optane memory 20gb thing

is this some gimmick?

i just require a simple laptop about $1.3k or less to do work(microsoft office), watch some movies, youtube and check emails, surf web

Optane memory a new technology by Intel for 8th gen i5, i7 and i9 processors.
It suppose to help to decrease loading times, provide better performance for everyday programs and tasks.
See:
https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/architecture-and-technology/optane-memory.html

In summary, it is a hardware cache memory, paired with intel Optane caching software and Intel CPU processor to "intelligently" optimize the performance of your system.
It is technology to fill in the gap between HDD Storage and DRAM.
Thus is a caching solution which actually retains the memory when the machine is shutdown (like your HDD Storage), but much faster than HDD.

Optane memory will be a mainstream technology down road, seen in many new models.

Actually for your usage requirements, any laptops in the market that runs on Intel i5 and above should do the job well. :)
Even lower end $399 models can do it, but maybe not as smooth or as fast.

As of now, it's still a gimmick because at the end of the day, it's still only a caching solution.

You're way better off with an SSD than a HDD paired with whatever Optane kit.

I would recommend avoiding it. Optane is fast, but is way overpriced and power hungry. I rather you get a laptop with proper SSD rather than this stop gap solution.
