Optical Network Terminal (ONT) vs Optical Netork Router (ONR). What's the difference?

ONT: I see a lot of used Singtel ONT on Carousell. I want to buy one to keep as spare, because Singtel does not give out ONT anymore. So when (not if) my current ONT breaks down, Singtel can't force me to switch over to ONR. So I want to know is the ONT from someone else's house can work when plugged into my house?

Static IP: Based on my experimenting (plugging a Cisco smart switch into ONT and untagging the VLAN traffic), when I connect two routers, I get two IP addresses assigned by Singtel at the same time (the speed is shared though, tested).
So I am not sure how Singtel assigns the static IP address. Is it based on the house unit number, or the MAC address of the router?

Getting a used ONT would not work. If you ever get converted to ONR, you would need persuasive skills to convince them to configure it in ONT mode. Otherwise find another ISP.

IP address is dynamic. It is randomly assigned based on a pool of IPs. If you turn it off (router) for sometime, you would get a different ip. If you need a fixed static ip, only way is to go for ISPs that offer them such as M1 MR VQ.

Replacing another ONT by ourselves cannot work as I tried to replace my fibre line with a friend home's huawei ONT and cannot get internet access. Singtel may lock MAC of modem tied to ur profile in backend. I asked 1688 and the girl said only their issued ONT will work as they need register at their end.

1. SingTel : pretty complicated
Public IP: yes, no static add-on

SingTel provide same connection for Internet and Fibre TV, vlan is needed. For ONR users, Vlan is handled by the ONR.

SingTel 1+1Gbps plan, the ONR will be configured as three port ONR and one port ONT, I believe that ONT port does not require vlan.

Certain users have asked Singtel to provide a special configuration for the ONR, three ports for SingTel TV only without internet access, one port ONT without vlan.

2. Whizcomms
Public IP
Whizcomms provides ONR, but you can ask them to configure the ONR in ONT mode prior to installation without charges. No Vlan needed.

3.M1
Public IP, ONT, no vlan needed.

4.Starhub
Public IP, ONT, no vlan needed.
Starhub uses different ONT ports to deliver Fibre Internet and Fibre TV.

Starhub 2Gbps plan: ONT port 1 and ONT port 3 used to deliver 2x1Gbps connection, ONT port 2 for Starhub Fibre TV

Starhub IPTV users, if need to mix internet and IPTV through same connection, special vlan configuration will be needed.

5. MyRepublic
Carrier Grade NAT, free Static IP subscription for MyRepublic Customers, one time charge of S$50.
https://myrepublic.net/sg/add-ons/static-ip/

6.Viewquest
1Gbps plan: ONT
2Gbps plan: ONR (2Gbps one network plan)
Static IP provided for free, no one time charge.
Ref: https://viewqwest.com/internet/2gbps

Ref:
https://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/...and-official-thread-part-5-a-5465321-104.html

Viewquest used to offer 2Gbps multi network plan where the Zhone modem router can be configured in bridge mode, it is basically 2x1Gbps plan like the Starhub 2Gbps plan.

M1 used to offer 2Gbps plan as well. I believe it is similar to the Starhub case.

Not do sure about M1 5Gbps and 10Gbps plan (no longer offered for new users).

SingTel 10Gbps plan: ONR
SuperInternet 10Gbps plan: your own HW
Vewquest 10Gbps plan: your own HW

One page info here.

Discussion here.
https://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/...0gbps-access-residential-service-5296094.html
You can ask in the above discussion thread.

S$199 per month for 10Gbps plan, if they have not raised the cost.

Speed: 10Gbps up and down.

Not using ONT/ONR, no HW provided, you are on your own -- you need expensive 10Gbps gears.

Router itself is S$730 if you use the same one as the following guy.

$730.00 | CCR1009-7G-1C-1S+ Mikrotik 10G Cloud Core Router 9 Port SFP+ CCR1009 Series | https://s.lazada.sg/s.IJto

If you need the router with two ports 10Gbps, then it will be more expensive.

$910.00 | MikroTik Smart Switch CRS312-4C+8XG-RM with 10G RJ45 Ethernet Ports Singapore | https://s.lazada.sg/s.IJGU

Asus AX-88U with Singtel TV and BB?

Hi all ,
need some advice. Currently i have Starhub BB connected to this router.

I also have Singtel TV with ONR .no BB ..

My contract is ending in early next year so i am thinking to ditch Starhub and go swing my internet to ST.

to reduce downtime of my home i would like to swing early before contract end.

So i would like to ask does this router work with Singtel ONR or i must die die use ONT from Singtel?

Can both Singtel IPTV and BB go through this router? understand there is some configuration on VLAN . Vlan is 20 rite?

With ONR, you can configure your wireless router as AP. What is your router model? No need vlan. No need ONT.

And SingTel TV and broadband go through the same ONR.

Fibre TP -- Singtel ONR

ONR port -- SingTel TV box

ONR port -- SingTel issued free wireless router (AC Plus, automatically run in AP mode); optional if you want to keep using your own router

ONR port -- your own router configured to run as AP

ONR port -- spare, or link to your Smart TV, etc

you need a good story/reason. Search the singtel 1gbps thread, a few case studies given there. may be can adapt the script and persuade singtel.

new subscriber got more bargaining power

That is a problem. You will need to use the ONR if you switch to SingTel Fibre broadband and you will lose quote some features of the RT-AX88U which is a good router.

I will suggest your just keep the status quo. Your current combination is not bad. In case you are not happy with Starhub, you can switch to M1.

If you want to consolidate to one telco, then you can keep Starhub Fibre broadband and move out of SingTel TV to Starhub TV once that contract expires.

I am using SingTel TV along with SingTel Fibre internet since Feb 2012. But I am using SingTel ONT. So I can use my own router.

If you like SingTel TV, just keep the status quo with Starhub Fibre broadband.

IMHO Starhub Fibre Internet is not bad. I have Starhub Fibre Internet as well since June 2014 (now at 500 Mbps). They actually offered free Starhub Cable TV Lite as well along with the Fibre Internet, but that free Cable TV Lite ceased operation in Sept 2019.
