Am doing photo editing work, and usually need to load 3 to 6 frames of about 36MP into layers to do various blending work.

What would be the most important to optimize the processing speed?

CPU? Graphics card? RAM?

Best is to use a 6-cores CPU and max out your RAM for this kind of work.

FYI, Google can really help you lots. Even Adobe has articles about this.

This is it, answers all here.

It's hard to say which one spec is 'most important'. It's like the spokes of a wheel, if any is shorter than the others, it may bottleneck the 'better' specs. In general you want a balanced rig.

If you are running latest CC versions, there's some GPU acceleration but you gotta see if these are effects/functions you use much.

By using a compatible graphics processor (also called a graphics card, video card, or GPU) with Photoshop, you can experience better performance and more features. Photoshop requires a compatible graphics processor in your computer for the following features to function and/or be accelerated:

Artboards
Camera Raw (see note)
3D
Scrubby Zoom
Birds Eye View
Flick Panning
Smooth Brush Resizing
Image Size – Preserve Details
Select Focus
Blur Gallery - Field Blur, Iris Blur, Tilt-Shift, Path Blur, Spin Blur (OpenCL accelerated)
Smart Sharpen (Noise Reduction – OpenCL accelerated)
Oil Paint (OpenCL accelerated)
Render – Flame, Picture Frame, and Tree
Perspective Warp

Hi,
Will recommend the following specs in your computer for optimal performance:
1. Operating system: 64 bit Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10 (64 bit allows the computer to support more than 4GB of RAM)
2. Processor: Intel i7 4th-6th generation
3. RAM: 8GB or above

Hope this info is helpful.

Add on : SSD too xD

Thanks everyone. I had already gone through several articles on optimization, and tested out several variations over many years.

I'm currently on Win7, 8GB of RAM and i7-3770K @ 3.50GHz, my work files are on SSD and scratch disk on SSD as well (but guessing that RAM is sufficient and won't hit the scratch disk most of the time). GFX ATI Radeon HD 5700.

Most of the lag I experience now are from blending multiple layers, taking 30s to 60s when I have more layers to blend. Sometimes I have over 100 such tasks so I'm trying to figure out any easy ways to optimize this further.

Hmmm.. 8GB... have you monitored your memory usage via Task Manager > Performance?

When I blend 3 layers, PS takes about 3.5GB of memory. I don't think it ends up on scratch disk yet.

Will speed of RAM make much difference?

I always max the RAM as my top priority. Don't need gaming type ones, Kingston Value RAM is good enough.
