Optimize My Rig Please

Hi folks,

I'm looking at a new rig for around $3k excluding OS, Mouse, Keyboard, Speakers and Monitor.

I am considering to get the Crosair Carbide Quiet 400Q so lighting is not important (can't see anyway )

Usage:

Lightroom, Photoshop, Illustrator: 70%
Applications: Open and edit 24 megapixel 14 bit RAW file and design in Illustrator

Premier: 10%
Applications: Edit and render FHD videos with simple text motion graphics

Gaming: 20%
Applications: FPS (Battlefield 1, Gears of War etc.)

Would love to hear from the experts how to maximize my spend. Aware some of the parts are overkill at the moment

I am not into overclocking, stability is more important. Secondary HDD for data not required as I save all data externally to a home NAS. I will be using a Dell U2515H (2560 X 1440) monitor.

Quick and dirty but reasonable list on roughly on your reqs.

• The primary money sinks on list are premium SSD, large storage (premium NAS) and RAMs
• Can easily downcost $300+ without compromising on key specs (Assuming H/B200 + i7-7700).
• Amazon stuff can scrap both if you want just an average aftermarket cooler, you can find the exact same PSU under a superflower leadex ii branding at a similar price via carousell (t258jgn)

I don't think the i7-7700K comes with heatsink. So you might want to consider the non-K version.

For PSU, you can consider Seasonic M12II Series(620W or 750W).

GTX 1070 FE not available in SG market liao. U need to look at aftermarket cooled options le.

Consider overclocking since you plan to get unlocked processor plus your kind of application will benefit from it. Oc is still stable with good cooling, mobo and power supply, as long you don't go too far. Kaby is stable at 5ghz most of the time even on air cooling option.

Cpu cooler can get cryorig h7 or cm hyper 212 for air option or corsair h110i v2 for aio water cooling.

Gskill trident Z is enthusiast grade. Consider ripjaw series or hyper x fury 3200mhz and use xmp to achieve the higher hz.

M.2 256gb x1 for OS and softwares.
1 sata or PCIE ssd 500gb for projects. 256gb is too little imo.

Psu Superflower leadex gold 650W.

Palit dual gtx 1070 only 535 in lazada. Can be even lower at qoo10 if you manage to find better deals. Keep air flow good for your case will do. Don't need Blower type gpu.

M2 850 EVO is sata based, don't bother. You are better off with a sata SSD.

If you're not overclocking, the non-k 7700 will run cooler and quieter. If you keep the integrated graphics disabled, it'll run at its turboboost speeds all the time.

Then again for the 7700K to run 5GHz, 1 in 2 chips need 1.38V or higher to run those frequencies. This is somewhat on the higher edge of what a 240mm liquid AIO can handle in temperature terms say in gaming. You also need a higher load line calibration level to keep a higher OC stable to combat Vdroop effect. (Level 5-6 out of level 9).
For the above, I don't think everyone out there will be comfortable with a 5GHz 24/7 OC usage.

In rendering, encoding or professional applications etc where more/all threads are utilised you will likely need to drop voltage + frequencies further to keep temperatures in check. A locked processor + locked board will likely give you better peace of mind since you do not OC imho.

If you pair a locked CPU with a higher end air cooler (like the noctua despite colour scheme or something comparable), you will already be able to keep temperature deltas between load and idle low. The only moving parts on these tower air coolers are only fans with good MBTF ratings and are a better investment than an AIO for the long haul.

Would just like to point out, 3200MHz is a validated speed by the vendor gskill on an XMP preset (glorified name for RAM overclocking). The RAMs will be overvolted from 1.2V to 1.35V if you run 3200MHz since these DDR4 DRAM ICs are typically designed at 1.2V. If you don't activate XMP (on a z board), you run the standard 2400MHz despite overpaying.

But you already pre-emptively discarded the notion of running an overclock, a 2400MHz 1.2V RAM would be your best bet running the standard ratings out-of-the-box, no oc.

Are you an accountant / auditor lol. For rams, ssd can consider getting from amazon.

For psu, get the superflower 650 gold locally will do, they are the manufactuers for the evga psu

Want stability and not into OC yet choose OC parts.

- Get 7700 instead
- Get H270/B250 instead
- Get valueRAM instead
- Get regular SATA SSD
- Get a Seasonic/Superflower PSU
- Get a Cryorig cooler if you want quieter rig, otherwise stock heatsink will do

Yeah. The 750W PSU I listed is excessive largely that bigger wattage PSUs tend to ramp up its fans slower due to lower work rate on components from more redundancy.But 650W models are already excessive without being too wasteful and will be a better sweetspot.

The reason for listing EVGA variants of the SF leadex PSU are that EVGA offers 7-10 years international warranty
(RMA Taiwan via prepaid courier).

Local variants are either at same price or more expensive than local sets at 5 year distro warranty. (G/P/T variants)

The P2 650W is sitting at a good sweetspot at about S$150 after conversion and comes with 10 year warranty. P2 is nearly EOL and probably will be replaced by a P3 when available. If you ever needed an RMA in many years down the road, here comes your "free upgrade" to an equivalent P3/P4 .
