I'm thinking of getting Oracle Certified Associate, Java SE 7 Programmer, to become a programmer. But many people seem to think it does not help me to achieve my career aim of becoming a software engineer or machine learning engineer (I have a degree in math so my math foundation is quite ok).

Or should I just focus my time on my projects?

Can I use government subsidy to pay for this?

Don't think you need any lame certification to be a good software engineeer/programmer.

I rather you buy this book, Cracking the Coding Interview, 6th Edition: 189 Programming Questions and Solutions by Gayle Laakmann McDowell (or google it) and work through every question, it will increase your chances of being a software engineer @ silicon valley by 10x.

I would also believe the Java certification is just a good to have, not really a leverage to becoming a good software engineer. When you finally get to touch on real projects that requires your Java skill set, the difficult parts are software development concepts like how to write safe multithreading software, how to use the SPRING framework properly, how to use the database pool library or the ORM library properly. Java is just yet another programming language, knowing it well is a must and taken for granted if you want to be good in using it for software development. What really makes you stand out is your knowledge of Java technologies if this is the camp you are going into, and knowing how to weld your tool appropriately

Just go and get it. It's not that hard to pass. The advantages of taking the cert are

1. It forces you to study. If you have the discipline though, it probably doesn't matter that much.
2. It's another checklist for the interviewer to tick. If the competition doesn't have it, you have an edge over them.
