going in december 17th, will be in kyoto for 5 days from dec 20th - dec 25th.. will they recover from the flood by then? or the its going to be in ruin?

Main public areas like the Arashiyama and the Kamogawa will definitely be fixed quite soon. It is when you want to go to a historic monument or site that the restoration will take longer.

I don't think Arashiyama in Kyoto is affected.
I see posts on instagram that it is still ok.

Was at Arashiyama yesterday. Its kinda OK except the area around the bridge abit trashed, and the view is quite ugly now. It was way worse few more days back, now want visit is OK.

Sad to hear that.
Thought it was spared.
Got any photos to show?

Hmm maybe I made it sound worse, it's just alot of driftwood and mud around both sides of the riverbank and the water is flowing really fiercely and it's brown...

Abit lazy to upload photo now still in Kyoto :s13: but I see alot of staffs clearing those dirty stuffs washed up.

This was 4 days ago, I saw this on reddit and postponed my arashiyama till ytd. https://m.imgur.com/a/wPMS3IR

Wow....that pictures sure look threatening!
The riverbanks look like they may burst anytime!

Good that you managed to avoid it.

The best part of Arashiyama for me was the Monkey Park and Togetsukyo bridge.
The bamboo forest was quite a let down...the bamboo looked dry and liveless and the place full of people and worst of all some of the tourists were very loud!

I had a relatively different experience at Arashiyama bamboo grove when I was there for Arashiyama autumn illumination back in Dec 2016. I was there in the afternoon, and the bamboos were surprisingly still green and lush despite already going into winter. There are certainly tourists around, but not that much. The atmosphere is so peaceful. If anything, I heard Koreans and Filipinos talking loudly instead (not shouting, just relatively louder than usual). If one is willing to wait, definitely can get some nice shots without other people in the background.

After finishing the entire trail, we went back to the start of the trail and waited till 5pm for the illumination light up. This time it was significantly more crowded, but still no pushing or shouting. Just a collective gasp heard when the lightup started zhun zhun at 5pm. This time walking through the trail again is slightly different experience as it is difficult to stop to take photos due to the massive crowd around us. But still... No shouting or anything. When we exited the whole trail and walked back to the main train station (not the JR station), we saw a huge massive queue that extended way beyond Togetsukyo Bridge, all quietly queueing to go into the illuminated grove. Despite the huge amount of people there, I hardly heard any noise from them. I can't tell if they were mostly locals or not,l because it was already very dark, but I did see some rolling their luggages along as they moved in the queue....

Maybe I'm lucky that the day I went didn't have unruly tourists...?

That was in 2016.
2 years is alot of difference.
Recently tourists damaged the bamboo.

Difficult to get a good picture but I managed to as I pointed the camera upwards and I looked down at the camera so it appeared as though no one was there.
