Overclocking 6600k

Hey guys, new to overclocking here. I'm trying to oc my 6600k to 4.4ghz @ 1.28volt but I'm not sure if I should be using adeptive mode or override mode for the voltage.

Should I leave xmp enabled while Overclocking?

Another thing to take note is that my current board doesn't support llc.


Any inputs would be greatly appreciated.

Intel XMP is only meant for RAM, its just like RAM timing settings. You can leave it enabled as long as you are not getting stability issues with RAM.

If I remember correctly, override mode means you set a fix voltage and it will not change. For adaptive, the board will alter the voltage automatically depending on CPU load.

I know that adaptive does allows the CPU to run a little cooler and save a bit of power. But I am an ol skool overclocker and prefer voltage to be fixed. That just me though.

Im on fix 1.28v at 4.4ghz

No problem so far with noctua d15 cooler.

adaptive means the added voltage only kick in when the cpu is at max clockspeed 4.4ghz or whatever you set

when the cpu is running 800mhz or 2.7ghz like general web browsing it is using the default voltage by intel

xmp or ram overclock should be the last step after yor reach the highest cpu overclock and verify it to be stable
reason is because every 100mhz jump on the cpu far outweigh cache and ram overclock ... but unstable cache or ram overclock could hinder cpu overclock ... so you need to get the maximum on the cpu first without interference from cache or ram running out of default speed

I run my 6600k at 4.62ghz 1.362v adaptive LLC4 for more than 1 year without any BSOD failure

Adaptive mode is implemented differently from board vendor to board vendor.

At least for asus, adaptive mode vcore applies to just the turbo multiplier (read that in either one of their article or the product manual). When your CPU isn't running turbo speeds it uses default intel values.

But overall this is normally a good combo to keep your CPU running at lower temps both load and especially idle.

Running a 6700K at 1.403v adaptive, LLC5, multicore acceleration + per core turbo multiplier from 4.7-4.9GHz. But can also run LLC6 ~1.38V partially because my board's vdroop is quite high likely from VRM daughterboard design.

Thing is my msi board doesn't support llc so I'd have to go with a higher volt.

I'm currently running 4.4ghz at about 1.27v. I'm thinking if I should up it to 4.4ghz as I'm not sure if the extra 100 would be worth the higher voltage.

I've tried using adaptive mode but I realized my voltage when not on stress test it also stays the same or even higher at times, is it normal?
guessing only, msi adaptive try vcore leave at auto but enter a manual offset (eg try 0.020 but adjust up/down to get the vcore u want on stress load)
