Overclocking Values

I'm a newbie in OC and needs some advice to OC a 4770K. At my first attempt, I set the multiplier to 45 and 1.250V for vCore in the BIOS. The system BSOD shortly after 5 mins of BF3 gameplay and Cinebeach. Since then, I reverted to default.

Earlier, I tried to OC my 4770K in the BIOS again by
1) setting the multiplier to 45 again,
2) setting the vCore to Auto,
3) RAM is at XMP.

I ran Cinebeach and my vCore hit 1.296V at 100% loading, temp at 65C.

Did a system stability test with AIDA64 achieved a vCore of 1.376V at 100% loading and temp read at 80C most of the time. At 1 instance, it hit 93C.

System is stable without further BSOD.

Hence, am I right that I have to set my vCore to a minimum of 1.250V or even 1.376V to achieve stability.

I read something about offsetting the vCore but I don't really understand.

I'm using Swiftech H220 and temp at idle is at 32C.

Are these temp and vCore reading normal coz it seem rather high to me.

Pls enlighten.

1.3v sounds about right for a 4.5GHz overclock. Might need more or less depending on silicone lottery.

normal temps

haswell runs quite hot when OC'ed

also 1.25V is probably the best voltage u shd apply for daily usage.. 1.3V seems abit high altho its up to the end user. Switech H220 is quite a gd good cooler

Thanks for the replies.

At least I know my readings are indeed quite normal and no cause of alarm.

Another thing I observed that my Core Speed would fluctuate from a minimum of 800MHz to a range of 1.2 to 1.6GHz, according to CPU-Z, even when I am surfing this forum or even typing this reply. Opening a web link would also cause it to fluctuate quite a bit though it will be back to 800MHz.

Maybe the system is new and I have been monitoring these numbers more closely to gain an understanding between the applications I am running and the responses from the CPU.

ur cpu will auto downclock if you not using intensive applications, only if u playing CPU intensive games, video processing, running benchmark etc then it will increase to your highest desired oc. saves power. dont worry, intel got you covered :)

Yes, learned something new. I thought ESIT only kicks in when I'm doing some moderate applications such as opening photo editing, video editing etc.

Hence, I'm surprised that even surfing forums and opening links will also trigger the EIST.

I disabled EIST when I did some overclocking earlier on, and then enabled it back when I finally had myself a stable overclock ready for 24/7 usage :)

Anyway for your vCore, if the auto setting of 1.296V worked for Cinebench, try setting it manually at that value (& same multiplier) and run AIDA64 again.

You don't want to run it beyond 1.25V (an admittedly arbitrary limit) for 24/7 usage. Haswell and Ivy Bridge chips are more voltage-sensitive than Sandy Bridge when it comes to overclocking; they don't respond well to voltages higher than what is necessary (it impacts the temps and lifespan). That is also why you'll also want to use voltage +/- offsets and let the mobo/CPU decide the actual (variable) voltage, instead of using a fixed Vcore.

A 4.3-4.4GHz OC would be more than good enough for Haswell TBH. De-lidding would benefit more beyond that point, since AFAIK high temps also start to have a direct negative impact on performance for CPU architectures below 28nm. I'd hate to have my CPU temps touch 80C at load, let alone 93C.

New updates.

I stress test the system at 4.5GHz and I got an astonishing 100C! System was stable without errors but I terminated the test shortly after I saw the boiling high temperature. VCore indicated above 1.3V

Down clocked the CPU to 4.3GHz and the temperature spiked at 100C again, though not as frequent as 4.5GHz. VCOre indicated slightly below 1.3V.

Repeated the test on AIDA64 and Cinebench at 4.3GHz and the temperature spiked at a more acceptable 70C. VCore at about 1.23V.

All the tests are done at the vCore set to Auto in BIOS. The H220 is secured to the CPU with the pump running during the test. Hence, it can be ruled out that the pump malfunctioned.

Is it normal that the temperature hit that high on Prime95 or Prime95 stress test the system to the extreme?

iirc prime95 does not support haswell testing officially.. you need to use at your own risk

If I were you I would be satisfied 4.3 - 4.4ghz 1.25V. That is around an average 4770k potential

Was shocked to see such a high temperature.
Yes, currently set at 4.3GHz.
