Had this problem on my dv6 and I find it annoying :( Anyone experience this problem? Ssomtimes, simple task like watching videos, it gets hot. When playing games, it gets way too hot and unbearable when you place your hand on the surface. Anyone had experience with your dv6 and maybe had solved the problem? :s11:

Does the exhausted air feel hot when you put your hands near the vent? I had previous gen of DV3 to 6, and all of them seem to have heat issues too. I suspect they cut corners with the cooler and the thermal compound.

quite hot when its 90 degrees. but funny thing is, when idle, the temperature doesnt change when i switch from normal fan speed to max fan speed. so i guess should be hardware prob. considering i am a casual to hardcore gamer, 90 degrees still last min 1.5 years and going, not bad la haha :s22:

I do have a feeling that the thermal compound used has dried up, so the contact is pretty bad, resulting in poor temps. After all, you've mentioned its been 1.5 years.

Rubbish, Thermal Compound Dried have no effect lar.
It's more likely the Air Vend Block with dust thus restrict the air flow.

Agreed the fan and fins might be dusty. But dried thermal compound will have an effect on cooling.

Anyway, no need for strong words even if u don't agree.

apologize. Dried Thermal compound will just harden (all the gap are all still filled up) and not have effect if you don't remove or move the heatsink. once you remove the heatsink you have to clean away all the old thermal compound from the cpu and heatsink and use a new layer of thermal compound. Just to make sure the old harden thermal compound does not leaves any gap as it's already harden.

my dv 6 practically die on me due to overheating. I got the fan changed also no use. Most probably is the thermal compound which is the main issue. I dont have confidence diy'ing it myself and since it has been lying on my table for a few months untouched lol

The DV6 heating problem has always been an on-going issues for all of their DV6 models. So even if you can get a replacement, it will still be the same problem. So if you want to use it for gaming, I suggest you sell away the DV6 and get a true gaming laptop. The DV6 is selling cheap with a reason.

Note that DV6 is not a laptop designed for gaming purpose as HP promote it as a high-end entertainment laptop with a mid-end graphics card for gaming but it is not the same as a true gaming laptop.

If you want a laptop with better design suited for over heating issue when gaming, should look at Alienware or MSI or ASUS gaming laptop or the more expensive Razer.
